Flowers for someone in Kaikohe

Kaikohe is the seat of the Far North District, on State Highway 12 about 260 km from Auckland and 85 km from Whangārei. It is the largest inland town and the highest community in Northland, with about 4,720 people, and it serves a wide farming district. Kaikohe is regarded as the heart of Ngāpuhi; the name comes from people surviving on kohekohe trees on Kaikohe Hill after a raid.

Tangihanga and marae

The Kaikohe area has two Ngāpuhi marae, Te Kiore Marae and Ōkorihi Marae. Many farewells here are tangihanga, and flowers are only part of what people bring. Our tangihanga guide explains koha, what to write and how to support the whānau. If in doubt, ask the family what is welcome.

Kaikohe's cemeteries

  • Kaikohe Public Cemetery is on the south side of State Highway 12, 3 km west of town, with a separate services area at the front.
  • Kaikohe (Marino) Māori Cemetery is a half-acre reserve behind the shops on the south side of Broadway, bordered by Marino Place and Memorial Avenue.

West of town, Aperahama Anglican Church opened in 1885 on the site of an 1837 church; Aperahama Te Awa is buried in its churchyard, and the building is listed by Heritage New Zealand. For funerals outside the marae, our sympathy flower guide covers what to send.

Kaikohe Care

Kaikohe Care at 22 Bisset Road provides aged residential care. Put the resident's full name and room on the order, and choose a compact arrangement in its own vase.

Farm addresses in the Far North

Kaikohe Hill rises 300 m on the western edge of town, with views to the Hokianga sand dunes, and the Ngawha hot springs are about 5 km east. Many recipients live out in the farming district on RD addresses. The mailtown is where the delivery round is based, not necessarily the nearest settlement, so copy the address exactly. Rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many areas. If the person is in hospital at Whangārei Hospital, flowers are delivered to the patient as soon as they arrive.

Distances in the Far North

Kaikohe is about 85 km from Whangārei and 260 km from Auckland, and the farming district around it is wide. If your recipient lives out of town, ask them how deliveries usually reach them, and allow extra time. A phone number on the order is essential.
