Riverhead is a small settlement in the Auckland region, home to about 3,840 people (June 2025 urban-area estimate). The area was traditionally known as Rangitōpuni, an important link for Tāmaki Māori because of Te Tōangaroa, a portage where waka were hauled between the Kaipara and Waitematā harbours. Some Riverhead addresses are rural, along roads such as the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway. Rural addresses carry an RD number where a suburb would normally go, and the mailtown is where the rural round is based – NZ Post notes that the mailtown can differ from where the property actually is. Copy the address exactly as the recipient gives it, add a phone number so the florist can find the gate, and allow extra time: rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas.

The Ladybug, 798 Coatesville-Riverhead Highway, is a 15-bedroom dementia care home for women on 12 acres of farmland, run by the Kumeu Village family.
Kumeu Village is at 507 State Highway 16 in neighbouring Kumeū and provides aged residential care.

Show season next door

Church, tavern and forest

St Philip's Church was established at Riverhead in 1926, and the Riverhead Tavern dates from the early 1870s. Riverhead Forest, a Pinus radiata forest north of the town, was first planted in 1927. After the paper mill closed in 1914, Riverhead became known as a tobacco-growing area.
