Graduation flowers by university
A bunch of flowers handed over after the ceremony, or waiting at home when the graduate gets back, is a lovely way to mark years of study. The trick is timing: each university runs its own schedule, ceremonies often fall on a Saturday, and some take place in the busy weeks before Christmas. We have gathered the dates published by four universities, and we update this page as more are confirmed.
University of Auckland: May and September
The University of Auckland's 2026 graduation schedule has two seasons:
- Autumn 2026: 4 to 7 May 2026, at Spark Arena.
- Spring 2026: 22 to 24 September 2026, at Auckland Town Hall.
Autumn graduation in 2026 falls in the same week as Mother's Day (Sunday 10 May), so florists in Auckland can be busier than usual that week. Order early.
University of Canterbury: autumn and spring celebration weeks
The University of Canterbury says it holds two graduation celebration weeks a year, during the autumn (April) and spring (August) mid-semester breaks.
- April 2027: Faculty Celebrations from 13 to 15 April, then the Eke Tangaroa and Pacific Celebrations on 16 April 2027.
- Spring 2027: the week commencing 30 August 2027.
If you are sending flowers to a graduate in Christchurch, note that Christchurch Hospital and Christchurch Women's Hospital do not permit flowers, which matters if a proud parent or grandparent is in hospital that week.

University of Otago: three December ceremony days
The University of Otago's official page lists three ceremony days in December 2026, all at Dunedin Town Hall:
- Saturday 12 December 2026: Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Science at 1pm; Medicine and Pharmacy at 4pm.
- Wednesday 16 December 2026: Arts, Music, Theology and BASc at 12pm; Science at 2:45pm and 5:30pm.
- Saturday 19 December 2026: Commerce and Law at 1pm; Applied Science, Health Sciences, Education and others at 4pm.
Two of the three days are Saturdays, when delivery is limited in many areas, and all fall in the run-up to Christmas. If you want flowers waiting at a graduate's flat or family home in Dunedin, aim for a weekday delivery before the ceremony. Dates for 2027 were not on the official page when we checked.
Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington
Victoria University of Wellington holds ceremonies in May and December. The May 2026 ceremonies ran from 26 to 29 May. For December 2026:
- Graduation week starts on Monday 7 December 2026.
- Ceremonies at the Michael Fowler Centre on Wednesday 9 December (9.30am and 3pm) and Thursday 10 December (3pm).
- The graduation parade is at lunchtime on Thursday 10 December.
- Te Hui Whakapūmau is held on the marae on Friday 11 December at 9.30am.
Wellington's wind is famous, so if you are carrying a bouquet along the parade route in Wellington, a compact, well-wrapped arrangement will travel better than a tall one. May 2027 dates were not yet published when we checked.
Family abroad, or a graduate living out of town
Graduation is often the moment when relatives overseas most want to send something. Fresh flowers cannot travel by post: they are on the Ministry for Primary Industries' list of items that cannot be brought or posted into New Zealand, and overseas mail is screened with x-rays and detector dogs. A bouquet ordered from a florist in New Zealand, delivered to the graduate's home, is the way to do it.
If the graduate is heading home to family after the ceremony and that home is rural, check the full address. New Zealand rural addresses carry "RD" and a number, and the town named in the address is where the rural delivery round is based rather than where the house is. Rural deliveries can take longer, so allow an extra day or two.
If you are going to a ceremony with a Māori or Pacific focus, such as Canterbury's Eke Tangaroa and Pacific Celebrations or Victoria's Te Hui Whakapūmau on the marae, and you are unsure what is appropriate to bring, ask the graduate or their family first.
Planning the flowers around the ceremony
A few practical habits make graduation flowers easier:
- Give them in person after the ceremony, or have them delivered to home before the day. We have not found venue rules about flowers, so a delivery to the ceremony venue itself is not something to rely on.
- Order early in the day and a few days ahead, especially for December ceremonies close to Christmas.
- Think about the weather. Late spring and early summer ceremonies coincide with grass pollen season. The University of Auckland notes that grass pollen runs from October through to Christmas and is highest between 6am and noon. If the graduate has hay fever, see our hay fever guide before choosing.
- Other universities. We have not yet confirmed dates for Massey, Waikato, AUT or Lincoln. Check their own graduation pages.
For the card, Ngā mihi nui (thank you very much, or kind regards) and Ngā mihi me te aroha nui (love and best wishes) are warm sign-offs, and Kia kaha means be strong, keep going.
