Order flowersWellsford is the northernmost major settlement in the Auckland region, 77 km northwest of the Auckland CBD and almost halfway between Auckland and Whangārei. The town sits on hilltops at the junction of State Highway 1 and State Highway 16 – its highest point is a 135 m hill east of Matheson Road and Worthington Road – and about 2,110 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate). It was first known as Whakapirau, the name of the local creek, before settlers chose the name Wellsford at a public meeting.

Wellsford was founded in 1862 by the Albertlanders, Baptist tradespeople and farmers from the Birmingham area. Their story is told at the Albertland Heritage Museum at Memorial Park on Port Albert Road (SH 16), which opened in 1990 and holds family archives, ship lists, land grants and photographs. The museum's website gives opening hours of 11am to 3pm Wednesday to Saturday and 1pm to 3pm on Sunday. A posy for a volunteer or a descendant researching their family history makes a kind gesture.
The railway reached Wellsford in 1909 and helped dairy and sheep farming grow; later, in 1979, Irwin Industrial Tools began making circular saw-blades in the town.
Heritage Rest Home at 2 Olympus Road is a small aged residential care home. For a resident, choose a compact arrangement already in a vase and include their full name on the order. If the resident is unwell, check with the home before sending. Our guide to hay fever and flowers suggests lower-pollen choices.
Wellsford has no hospital. The nearest Health NZ hospital with an emergency department is North Shore Hospital in Takapuna, about 58 km away in a straight line. Its infection-control guidance asks patients and visitors not to bring items that could carry infection into hospital, such as flowers, plants and toys. Check with the ward before sending – or plan a bouquet for when the person is back home in Wellsford.
Wellsford Cemetery at 80 School Road is an Auckland Council cemetery that still accepts burials, with burial and ash plots; enquiries go through North Shore Memorial Park. For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or service venue rather than to the cemetery, with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with the card.
Wellsford lies near a narrowing of the Northland Peninsula, where an arm of the Kaipara Harbour reaches within 15 km of the east coast, and lifestyle blocks have drawn more people to the district. Use the RD number where a suburb would normally appear, written "RD 1" without dots, and copy the mailtown and postcode exactly – the mailtown is where the rural round is based, not necessarily where the property is. Add a phone number and allow extra time: rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas.
For students at Rodney College or Wellsford School, sending to the home address is usually simpler than the school office. Sending further south as well? See our Warkworth page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Wellsford.
