Flower delivery in Dunedin – Ōtepoti

Dunedin, Ōtepoti, is home to about 104,000 people and to Dunedin Hospital, the largest hospital in New Zealand south of Christchurch and the main base hospital for Otago and Southland. That means many flower orders here are for patients, and the hospital rules in this city are stricter than most. Read the section below before you order.

Strict flower rules at Dunedin's hospitals

Both Dunedin Hospital and Wakari Hospital follow the same rule: fresh flowers are not allowed in ICU, HDU, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical or medical wards, or in multi-bed rooms, because of the risk to patients with respiratory disorders. That covers a large part of the hospital, so check with ward reception before you order.

Good alternatives are a card, a small gift, or flowers sent to the patient's home to greet them after discharge. A replacement hospital is being built on the former Cadbury factory site, so if in doubt, confirm where the patient is with the family.

The oldest botanic garden in the country

Dunedin Botanic Garden was founded in 1863 and is the oldest botanical garden in New Zealand. It covers 28 hectares of the Town Belt, and the upper garden has an extensive rhododendron dell.

Rhododendrons have long been part of the city's spring. The former Dunedin Rhododendron Festival drew nearly 7,000 people to more than 25 open gardens. Its successor, the GO Ōtepoti garden festival, held its first spring event, GO Bloom, from 17 to 26 October 2026.

Sympathy flowers and Dunedin's cemeteries

Dunedin has several historic and working cemeteries:

  • Andersons Bay Cemetery holds the city's crematorium, opened in 1927 and still in use.
  • Green Park Cemetery at Waldronville has taken most new burials since the 1980s.
  • Dunedin Northern Cemetery, set aside in 1872, is a Category I historic place and contains Larnach's Tomb.
  • Dunedin Southern Cemetery.

Funeral flowers are usually sent to the funeral home or to the family. Our guide to sympathy flowers in NZ covers wording and timing.

Practical tips for ordering

Put the recipient's phone number on the order, especially for student flats and hospital deliveries where the person may not be home. Because Dunedin Hospital serves all of Otago and Southland, the patient may have come from a long way away, so ask the family for the exact ward. Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas, so order early in the day if the date matters. For towns around the city, including Mosgiel, see our Otago region page.
