Flowers for the Hibiscus Coast

The Hibiscus Coast is not one town but a string of communities in the Auckland region – Hatfields Beach, Orewa, Silverdale and the Whangaparāoa Peninsula – with about 67,800 residents between them. The name itself is a flower story: it was chosen in the 1960s after the hibiscus, which is not native to New Zealand, and became official in 1971.

Four communities, one name – get the address right

Because the Hibiscus Coast covers several places, the suburb on your order matters. A delivery to the far end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula is a different trip from one to central Orewa.

  • Write the actual suburb (for example Orewa, Silverdale or the peninsula suburb) rather than just "Hibiscus Coast".
  • Add a phone number so the driver can call if a gate or apartment entrance is hard to find.
  • Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas; order early if the date matters.

Many residents commute: commuter ferries run on weekdays between Gulf Harbour and central Auckland, so a weekday bunch sent to a home may sit until evening. A workplace address in the city might suit better – see our Auckland page.

Before sending flowers to North Shore Hospital

North Shore Hospital is the public hospital listed for the Hibiscus Coast. Its infection-control guidance asks patients and visitors to help keep people safe by not bringing items that could carry infection, and it names flowers and plants among them. That means flowers are discouraged; check with the ward before sending, or send them to the patient's home for when they are discharged. Our North Shore Hospital page has the exact wording.

Kauri, a regional park and a farewell

The coast has its own green places. Alice Eaves Scenic Reserve in Orewa contains remnant kauri forest, including a tree estimated to be over 300 years old, and Shakespear Regional Park at the far end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula has been a regional park since 1967.

For sympathy flowers, Auckland Memorial Park is the cemetery listed for the area. Funeral flowers usually go to the funeral home or the family rather than to the cemetery; our funeral flower guide explains what is usual and what to write on the card.
