Order flowersTaumarunui, a Ruapehu District town of about 4,940 people, is the largest centre for a long way in any direction: 65 km south of Te Kūiti and 55 km west of Tūrangi on State Highway 4. It grew from a Māori settlement where the Ongarue River meets the Whanganui, and many know it from Peter Cape's 1957 ballad "Taumarunui on the Main Trunk Line". Because the town serves such a wide area, it is worth knowing where things are before you order.

Taumarunui Hospital at 63 Kururau Road is the local public hospital and health centre, with an emergency department and a primary birthing unit. We have not found a published flower rule, so check with the ward before sending, and put the patient's full name and ward on the order.
Avonlea Home and Hospital at 52 Ward Street, Rangoroa, provides aged residential care. Use the resident's full name and the home's name.
Ruapehu District Council lists three Taumarunui cemeteries:
Taumarunui Funeral Services is at 34 Huia Street. Sympathy flowers usually go to the funeral home or the family; ask before you send. Several marae of Ngāti Hāua and Ngāti Maniapoto surround the town, including Ngāpuwaiwaha Marae on Taumarunui Street – for a tangihanga, see our tangihanga guide.
Taumarunui gets warmer summers than other central North Island towns but cold, frosty winters. In June 2002 it recorded just 27 hours of sunshine, the lowest in the country; a typical year brings about 1,449 mm of rain and 1,822 hours of sunshine. In winter, avoid flowers being left outside overnight, and give a phone number for the recipient. For farm addresses, use the RD number and allow extra time – rural addresses can take longer.
The name is commonly translated as "the place of big shelter", with references to it as a large sheltered place for growing kūmara.
For neighbouring towns, see Te Kūiti, Tūrangi and the Manawatū-Whanganui region.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Taumarunui.
