Palmerston North, the former Rose City

The 1.7-hectare Dugald Mackenzie Rose Garden in Palmerston North hosts the New Zealand international rose trials and helped earn the city its old nickname. It sits in the Victoria Esplanade, a 26-hectare park on the northern bank of the Manawatū River opened in 1897. Ashhurst, about 14 km north-east under the Ruahine Range, has its own page too.

Hospital flowers: check first

The patient brochure for Palmerston North Hospital says: "Most wards are flower free - please check before someone sends or brings in flowers." Check with the ward before sending, or have flowers delivered to the patient's home instead. Horowhenua Health Centre in Levin has no emergency department, and a health shuttle links it to Palmerston North Hospital.

Whanganui's gardens

Whanganui has Rotokawau Virginia Lake on St John's Hill, with an Art Deco conservatory and winter garden. About 8 km north-west, Bason Botanic Gardens hold one of the country's most extensive public-garden orchid collections, plus camellias, magnolias and roses.

Towns of the plains and hills

  • Feilding has won New Zealand's Most Beautiful Town award 16 times.
  • Levin and Foxton, the self-styled Flax Capital of New Zealand, are on the Horowhenua side; Foxton Beach and Shannon are also served.
  • Marton and Bulls are in Rangitīkei, while Dannevirke and Pahiatua are in Tararua; Woodville is also served.
  • Taumarunui has cold, frosty winters, and Taihape, Ohakune and Raetihi are also on our list.

Frost, farms and rural addresses

Dannevirke has regular winter frosts because of its altitude, and Taumarunui recorded just 27 hours of sunshine in June 2002. In winter, ask the recipient to keep flowers in a warm room. A typical rural address looks like Railway Road, RD 10, Palmerston North 4470. Copy the address exactly, and allow extra time for RD deliveries.

Summer brings the opposite problem: Levin's record high is about 32.6 °C in January, so in hot weather keep the vase topped up and out of direct sun.

Sympathy flowers in smaller towns

In a small town, funeral flowers usually go to the funeral director or the family's home rather than the cemetery. Bulls' public cemetery, for example, is Clifton Cemetery at the end of Watson Street, one of eight public cemeteries run by Rangitīkei District Council. Our funeral and sympathy flowers guide covers wording, timing and what to send.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Foxton Beach, Taihape, Woodville, Shannon, Ohakune, Raetihi.
