Sending flowers to Ōtorohanga

Ōtorohanga is known as the 'Kiwiana Town' of New Zealand and the gateway to the Waitomo Caves. It lies on the Waipā River, 53 km south of Hamilton and 18 km north of Te Kūiti, and is a service town for the surrounding dairy-farming district. About 3,240 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate), in the Waikato region, and the town is the seat of Ōtorohanga District Council. Before the 1860s Ōtorohanga was a Ngāti Maniapoto village with whare, peach trees and a flour mill, and nearby Huipūtea is a 300-year-old kahikatea tree.

Kiwi House and Kiwiana

Ōtorohanga's Kiwi House was the first place in the world where the public could see kiwi in captivity. It has operated since 1971 at 20 Alex Telfer Drive and, besides North Island brown kiwi, keeps tuatara, kea, kākā and the rare Mahoenui giant wētā. Its website lists opening hours of 9am to 5pm every day except 25 December. The town held a yearly Kiwiana Festival until 2007, and in 1986–87 local businesses briefly renamed themselves 'Harrods' – the town became 'Harrodsville' – after Harrods of London threatened legal action against New Zealand businesses of that name.

If you are sending flowers to someone who works with visitors here, give the business name and their full name on the order.

Flowers at Ōtorohanga Cemetery

Ōtorohanga District Council runs two cemeteries: Ōtorohanga Cemetery at 2 Karaka Road and Kāwhia Cemetery on Lake Road, Kāwhia. In the lawn areas of both, floral tributes and adornments are allowed on the memorial headstone bases only, so choose a vase arrangement or a compact bunch that fits neatly there. Adornments and tomb tops are permitted in the old tomb-top areas.

For a funeral service, send flowers to the funeral director or venue with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with wording.

Six marae in and around town

Six marae are in and around Ōtorohanga: Kahotea, Rereamanu, Tārewānga, Te Keeti, Te Kotahitanga and Turitea, all meeting places for Ngāti Maniapoto hapū. If you are sending condolences to a tangihanga, the customs are different from a funeral home service – our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains what is appropriate.

Beattie Home & Hospital

Beattie Home & Hospital at 172 Maniapoto Street is owned by Beattie Community Trust. It has 36 beds, including 10 dual-purpose rooms for rest home or hospital-level care, and its dementia care is in the purpose-built Papakāinga Homestead with 22 rooms – 58 beds across the two facilities. When sending to a resident, give their full name and say which building they are in. A compact arrangement in a vase suits a care room best.

Hospital care in Te Kūiti, and rural addresses

There is no public hospital in Ōtorohanga. The nearest is Te Kuiti Hospital, a Health New Zealand hospital with an emergency department at 24 Ailsa Street in Te Kūiti, about 17 km away. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so check with the ward before sending. See our page for Te Kūiti for more.

The Ōtorohanga district stretches from Kāwhia Harbour to Pureora Forest Park. For a rural address, use the RD number exactly as the recipient writes it, add a phone number, and allow extra time – weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas.
