Order flowersKihikihi is a Waipā District town of about 3,820 people on State Highway 3, 5 km south of Te Awamutu, which it serves as a satellite community. Its name means 'cicada' in Māori, imitating the insect's sound. Because many services are in Te Awamutu, a flower order for a Kihikihi family often ends up there – so we cover both.

Te Awamutu, 5 km north, is often called 'The Rose Town of New Zealand' for the rose gardens in its town centre. Roses are an obvious choice for someone from Kihikihi or Te Awamutu. The Kihikihi Trail cycleway to Te Awamutu opened in 2017. Our Te Awamutu page covers deliveries there.
Aged-care homes for the area are in neighbouring Te Awamutu, not in Kihikihi itself:
Put the resident's full name and the home's name on the order.
Kihikihi Cemetery is listed by Waipā District Council; railway surveyor John Rochford (1832–1893) is buried there. Christ Church (Anglican), built in 1881, is one of nine Heritage New Zealand listed places in the town. The nearest funeral home in our data is Te Awamutu Funeral Services at 570 Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu. Sympathy flowers usually go to the funeral home or the family – ask first. Our funeral flower guide helps with the card.
The Māori chief Rewi Maniapoto lived in Kihikihi, and the 1894 Rewi Maniapoto Memorial and Reserve is a Heritage New Zealand listing. The Battle of Ōrākau was fought near the town from 31 March to 2 April 1864; Rewi's reply to a surrender offer is recorded as 'Ka whawhai tonu ahau ki a koe, ake, ake' – 'I shall fight you forever, and ever, and ever.' A memorial marks the general battle site on Arapuni Road, about 4 km east of Kihikihi; the pā site itself is on private farmland.
In the 19th century Kihikihi was described as a 'border settlement' or 'frontier town', and it was ruined in the 1880s by the 'Great Wet Peace' with the partition of the King Country. Its other heritage places include the c1868 Alpha Hotel, the 1883 Star Hotel, the 1904 Town Hall, the 1907 Constable's House and Police Station and the 1920 World War One Memorial – our Anzac Day guide covers flowers for 25 April.
If your patient is at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, flowers are not allowed in Critical Care (ICU and HDU, Level 4 Meade Clinical Centre); check with the ward before sending. See our Waikato Hospital page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Kihikihi.
