Flowers for Te Kūiti

Te Kūiti, the Waitomo District town of about 4,850 people, calls itself the Shearing Capital of the World. It sits where State Highways 3 and 30 meet on the North Island Main Trunk railway, with farmland and limestone quarries all around. Its name, from 'Te Kūititanga', literally means 'the valley', 'the squeezing in' or 'the narrowing'. Here is what we have gathered for anyone sending flowers into town.

Ailsa Street hospital and Hillview on Hospital Road

Te Kuiti Hospital at 24 Ailsa Street is the local public hospital and health centre. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so check with the ward before sending. Hillview Home and Hospital at 7 Hospital Road provides aged residential care and is the only aged-care home Healthpoint lists for Te Kūiti. For either, include the full name of the person and, at the hospital, the ward.

Muster day on 20 March 2027

The Great New Zealand Muster, with the NZ Shearing Championships and the Running of the Sheep, fills Te Kūiti's main streets; the next one is on Saturday 20 March 2027. Weekend delivery is limited in many areas and the main streets will be busy, so for congratulations flowers, a weekday delivery to a home or workplace is the safer choice. The six-metre Shearing Statue was unveiled in March 1994, and in May 1994 time capsules were sealed inside the shearer's foot.

The Waitomo District Christmas Parade is another street event; in 2025 it ran from 6pm on Friday 12 December along Rora Street. Our Christmas flowers guide covers the busy weeks before 25 December.

Mangarino Road cemetery, King Street funerals and marae

Te Kūiti Cemetery (old and new sections) is on Mangarino Road. It is one of six cemeteries provided by Waitomo District Council, whose records can be searched online. The Old Public Cemetery holds the official war graves of three men who served in the New Zealand forces in the First World War – for Anzac Day, see our Anzac Day guide.

VJ Williams & Sons, funeral directors at 33–35 King Street West, have helped families in the Ōtorohanga and Waitomo districts for over 60 years. Ask the funeral director where flowers should be delivered. Te Tokanganui-a-Noho, the meeting house built in 1873 for Te Kooti and his followers, belongs to Ngāti Rōrā; Te Kumi Marae (Ngāti Peehi and Rōrā) and Mōtītī Marae (Ngāti Kinohaku) are also in the area. For a tangihanga, ask the whānau what is appropriate.

Tatsuno garden, the class B station and 1881

The Tatsuno Japanese Garden is at the southern end of the main street, and the railway station is described as the finest remaining example of a standard class B station. The area was opened to colonial settlers in 1881. Te Kūiti High School opened in 1914 as Te Kuiti District High School; Te Kūiti Primary dates from 1897, St Joseph's Catholic School from 1921, and Te Wharekura o Maniapoto became a Māori immersion school in 1991.

January averages a daily high of 24.4 °C and July 13.6 °C, with about 1,450 mm of rain a year – wet in winter, dry in late summer – so add notes about a sheltered place in the wet months. Nearby: Ōtorohanga, Taumarunui and the Waikato region.
