Sending flowers in New Plymouth

New Plymouth – Ngāmotu – is a city of about 60,200 people (June 2025 urban-area estimate) in the Taranaki region. A New Plymouth site was the sunniest place in New Zealand in 2021, with 2,592 sunshine hours, and snow is rare. That makes it a good place for flowers – and it means a few practical things are worth knowing before you order.

Rhododendron country

Spring is a big deal in Taranaki gardens. Pukeiti, about 23 km from New Plymouth, is a five-star garden owned by the Taranaki Regional Council with a world-class rhododendron collection, and its peak flowering runs from July to October. Closer to town, Tūpare at 487 Mangorei Road was created from 1932 by Russell Matthews and his family and is known for spring bulbs, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas.

If the person you are sending to is a keen gardener, a spring bouquet with bulbs or a flowering plant fits the local mood. Our guide to flowers in season shows what is at its best month by month.

Festival dates in 2026–27

  • Centuria Taranaki Garden Festival – now in its 39th year, it opens private and public gardens across Taranaki from 30 October to 8 November 2026. Flowers make a kind thank-you for a garden host.
  • TSB Festival of Lights – held in Pukekura Park from 19 December 2026 to 24 January 2027, right through the Christmas and summer holidays. See our Kiwi Christmas flowers guide for ideas for that season.

Pukekura Park itself is a 52-hectare Garden of National Significance in central New Plymouth. It opened as a recreation ground in 1876, and its Fernery and Display Houses, hand-dug into the hillside, opened in 1928.

Visiting someone at Taranaki Base Hospital

Taranaki Base Hospital is the public hospital in New Plymouth. We have not found a published flower rule for it, and rules can differ from ward to ward, so check with the ward before sending. Include the patient's full name and ward on your order. If the patient is likely to go home soon, a delivery to their home is often the simpler option.

Cemeteries and sympathy flowers

New Plymouth District Council's cemeteries include Te Henui Cemetery, Awanui Cemetery and Mangapouri Cemetery, and the district also has the Taranaki Crematorium. For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or service venue, not to the cemetery, and give the full name of the person who has died and the date of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide has more help.
