Sending flowers to Hāwera

Hāwera began with a blockhouse built for settlers on 16 February 1870, and takes its name from Te Hāwera, a kāinga burnt after an attack – the “burnt place”. Today it is the main town of the South Taranaki District, with 10,365 residents at the 2023 census, and a dairy town above all: the nearby Whareroa factory is the largest single-site dairy factory in New Zealand, with around 1,000 staff at peak season.

Hāwera Hospital on Hunter Street

Hāwera Hospital is on Hunter Street and provides mental health, children's health, maternity, surgical and medical services, with an emergency department open 24 hours a day. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so check with the ward before sending, and include the patient's full name and ward. If you are sending flowers for a new baby in the maternity unit, a small posy is easier to take home than a large bouquet. If your patient has been moved to a larger hospital, check that hospital's rules too.

Annie Brydon and Trinity: Hāwera's rest homes

Eldernet lists five residential care homes in South Taranaki, and two are in Hāwera:

  • Annie Brydon Lifecare & Village, 71 Glover Road
  • Trinity Home & Hospital, 47–61 Puriri Street

The nearest other one is Eltham Care Rest Home at 54 Maata Road in Eltham. Put the resident's full name and the home's name on the order.

Taranaki Garden Festival season

The Taranaki Garden Festival opens gardens across the region in spring; the 2026 dates were 30 October to 8 November. Flowers sent in late October and early November tie in with a time when the whole region is thinking about gardens. Our seasonal flower guide shows what is at its best in spring.

1,149 mm of rain and a lot of farm roads

Hāwera has a temperate oceanic climate, with about 1,149 mm of rain a year. Wet weather is not a problem for flowers in water, but a soggy box on a doorstep is. When you order:

  • add the recipient's phone number so the driver can call;
  • mention a covered porch or side door in the delivery notes;
  • for farm addresses, use the RD number – rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays.

Tawhiti Museum, the water tower and King Edward Park

Tawhiti Museum at 401 Ohangai Road opened in 1988. Created by artist Nigel Ogle, it fills 5,500 m² with life-sized figures, scale models, recreations of local Māori pā and a bush railway; from June to September it opens on Sundays only. In town, the Hāwera Water Tower was finished in 1914 after the 1912 Central Hotel fire, and King Edward Park, a large recreation ground, opened in 1902. Hāwera Primary School celebrated its 150th jubilee in 2025, and Te Paepae o Aotea teaches Years 7 to 13. For other Taranaki towns, see New Plymouth and the Taranaki region.
