Order flowersPōkeno is a Waikato town 53 km south-east of Auckland, 9 km from Tuakau and 5 km from Mercer. It has grown quickly: about 6,081 people lived there at the 2023 Census, and the June 2025 estimate is 7,380. Pokeno School alone had a roll of 671 in July 2026. For someone who has just moved to the town, a bouquet for the new home is a thoughtful idea. Below is what we think you should know.

State Highway 1 once ran through Pōkeno, but the 1992 upgrade to expressway standard bypassed the town, so deliveries leave the expressway to reach the town centre. Give the full street address, the postcode and the recipient's phone number so the florist can find the right door. Pōkeno is also known for its two competing ice cream shops on the main road, a handy landmark if you are describing where a business is. Film fans may know the old service station from Goodbye Pork Pie, where the fugitives steal fuel.
The town takes its name from the Ngāti Tamaoho settlement of Pokino, northwest of today's town centre. Queen's Redoubt, erected from June 1862, was General Cameron's base for the invasion of the Waikato and housed 450 soldiers; it was the second-largest fortification the British built during the New Zealand Wars, and a military hospital for 100 men was set up there. The Queen's Redoubt Trust acquired most of the site in 2003 and has developed it as a visitor attraction with an education centre.
At the end of Bluff Road, where the original Great South Road reached the Waikato River, a stockade was built in 1862 on the site of an older pā. Pōkeno's railway station opened in 1875 and closed to passengers in 1973.
Waikato District Council runs two cemeteries in the town: Pōkeno Cemetery on Fraser Road and Pōkeno Old Soldiers Cemetery on Helenslee Road. For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or the venue rather than to the cemetery, and give the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide explains card wording.
Pōkeno has no hospital of its own. The nearest is Pukekohe Hospital, a Health NZ hospital at 1 Tuakau Road in Pukekohe, about 10 km away. It has no emergency department. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so check with the ward before sending.
We have not found a residential care home listed in Pōkeno itself. Nearby options include Apārangi Village Residential Care Unit in Te Kauwhata and, in Pukekohe, Palms Lifecare & Village on Harris Street and Ryman Possum Bourne Care Centre on Lisle Farm Drive. For a resident, give the full name and the name of the home, and choose a compact arrangement in a vase. See our Pukekohe page for more, or our page for neighbouring Tuakau.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Pōkeno.
