Order flowersGisborne – Tūranganui-a-Kiwa – is the first city in the world to see the sun each day. It is the seat of the Gisborne region (Te Tairāwhiti), with an urban population estimated at 38,100 in June 2025. Here is what we have gathered to help your flowers arrive well.

Eastwoodhill Arboretum, about 23 km from Gisborne, covers 135 hectares with more than 4,000 taxa of trees, shrubs and climbers. In spring it has a hectare of daffodils, along with flowering cherries, magnolias and azaleas. In the city, the Gisborne Botanical Gardens cover 5.1 hectares between Aberdeen Road and the Taruheru River. Set aside in 1874, they are the city's oldest reserve and include Australian, Japanese and cactus gardens.
For a friend who loves Eastwoodhill in spring, a bunch of daffodils or blossom-style flowers carries that memory. Our guide to what flowers are in season in NZ helps you choose.
Gisborne Hospital is the public hospital in the city. We have not found a published flower rule for it, and rules can differ between wards. Check with the ward before sending, and include the patient's full name and ward on your order. If the person is due home soon, sending flowers to their home address avoids the question altogether.
Taruheru Cemetery is where most local burials happen: about 92 percent of burials and ash interments in the city take place there. The Gisborne Crematorium is also at Taruheru Cemetery, on Nelson Road.
For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral director or venue rather than to the cemetery, with the full name of the person who has died and the date of the service. If you are sending to a tangihanga, our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains the customs. The funeral flower etiquette guide covers card wording.
If the recipient lives out of town, check the address carefully. Rural addresses carry an RD number where a suburb would normally be, for example RD 1, and the mailtown is where the rural round is based. Write the address exactly as the recipient uses it, add their phone number, and allow extra time for rural addresses. Weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas, so order early in the week when you can.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Gisborne.
