Sending flowers to Havelock North

Havelock North, known locally as 'the village', lies less than 2 km south-east of Hastings on the Heretaunga Plains, at the base of Te Mata Peak. It was set up in 1860 as a planned government settlement and named after Sir Henry Havelock. About 15,000 people live here, and small gullies around the town have been turned into forests, parks and reserves, which gives it a leafy look.

Te Mata Park and the redwoods above the village

In Māori legend, Te Mata Peak (399 metres) is the body of the giant Te Mata o Rongokako. Te Mata Park on its slopes was gifted to the community in 1927 by the Chambers family and is run by volunteer trustees. It has walking and mountain-bike tracks, hundred-year-old giant redwoods and 360-degree views over Hawke's Bay. Closer to the centre, Keirunga is an arts venue with heritage gardens, used for exhibitions, markets, weddings and celebrations.

Hot January days in Hawke's Bay

Mean temperatures in Havelock North range from 24.4 °C in January to 13.9 °C in July, with about 795 mm of rain a year. That warmth is good for gardens and hard on cut flowers left in the sun. Put the recipient's phone number on the order so the florist can reach them, and choose long-lasting flowers in midsummer. Our flower care guide explains how to help them last.

Iona, Woodford House and other village schools

Havelock North has nine schools, among them Iona College (opened 1914), Hereworth School (1927), Havelock North High School (1975) and Woodford House (1894). Several take boarders, so parents and grandparents far away often send flowers for prizegivings and the end of the school year. For a boarder, ask the school first how deliveries are received. Our graduation flowers guide has ideas.

Orchards, vineyards and rest homes

The town is surrounded by orchards and vineyards, and local industry is based on fruit and wine. If your recipient lives on one of the surrounding properties, their address will use an RD number. Write it exactly as they do, add a note about the gate, and allow extra time, because rural addresses can take longer and weekend delivery is limited in many areas.

For an older relative in care, Havelock North has Arvida Mary Doyle at 3 Karanema Drive and Ryman James Wattie Care Centre at 122 Te Aute Road. Include the resident's full name and room or wing if you know it.

Patients at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital

The region's main hospital is Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Flowers are not allowed in its intensive care unit, and no rule is published for other wards, so check with the ward before sending. For other towns nearby, see our Hawke's Bay region page.
