Order flowersWhakatāne is the seat of the Bay of Plenty region, with an urban population estimated at 16,950 in June 2025. It has frequently recorded the highest annual sunshine hours in New Zealand – often more than 2,600 hours a year. Sunshine is good news for gardens and a small challenge for cut flowers, and below we explain how to make a bouquet last, plus what to know about the hospital and sympathy flowers.

Whakatāne Hospital makes things easy. Health New Zealand says you can send mail and flowers directly to the wards throughout the day. Include the patient's full name and, if you know it, the ward. If the person is in a unit with special rules or is about to be discharged, a quick call to the ward before you order avoids a wasted trip.
Mean daily maximum temperatures in Whakatāne range from about 24 °C in January to 14 °C in July. With so much sun, these habits help:
Our flower care guide goes into more detail.
Hillcrest Cemetery and the Whakatāne District Crematorium are on Ōhope Road, between Whakatāne and Ōhope. For a funeral or cremation service, send flowers to the funeral director or venue rather than the cemetery, and include the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service.
If the farewell is a tangihanga, the customs are different; our guide to tangihanga and condolences explains them. A bunch of flowers to the family home in the weeks afterwards is also a kind gesture.
For addresses outside town, rural properties use an RD number in place of a suburb, and the mailtown is where the rural round is based, which may differ from where the property is. Copy the address exactly as the recipient uses it. Rural addresses can take longer, and weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas, so order early in the week where you can.
Sending to Ōhope as well? See our page for Ōhope.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Whakatāne.
