Sending flowers to Hastings

Hastings, also known as Heretaunga, is a Hawke's Bay town of about 49,800 people (June 2025 urban-area estimate). The district grows stone fruit, pipfruit, kiwifruit and vegetables and is one of New Zealand's major red wine areas, so some of the people you send flowers to may live on rural roads rather than in town. Here is our practical guide for sending flowers here.

Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital

The main public hospital in Hastings is Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital. Health New Zealand's page for the intensive care unit is direct: do not bring flowers. We have not found a published rule for other wards, so check with the ward before sending.

If the patient is in ICU, think about a card now and flowers to the family home, or a bouquet once the person has moved to a general ward and the ward has said yes. Hastings also has a private hospital, Royston Hospital; we have no published flower rule for it, so ask the hospital first.

Heat, sun and dry air

Hastings is warm and dry, with more than 2,200 sunshine hours and less than 800 mm of rain a year, and summer days often reach the low 30s °C. That is lovely for gardens but tough on a bouquet waiting outside.

  • Include a phone number for the recipient so the florist can hand the flowers over in person.
  • For a summer delivery, choose hardy flowers and ask the recipient to put them in cool water straight away.
  • For rural addresses, use the RD number exactly as the recipient writes it, and allow more time.

Our flower care guide explains how to keep cut flowers going in hot weather.

Parks with roses

Frimley Park, opened in October 1953 and covering 19.78 hectares, has a rose garden – a good reminder that roses are a classic Hastings choice. Cornwall Park in Mahora opened in November 1905 and covers 8.34 hectares. If your recipient walks in either park, a bunch of garden-style roses will feel close to home.

Funerals and the Orchard Road crematorium

The Hawke's Bay crematorium at Hastings Cemetery, 202 Orchard Road, is the main crematorium in the region and serves Hastings, Napier and Central Hawke's Bay. Another crematorium is listed at the corner of Orchard and Maraekakaho Roads.

When sending sympathy flowers, address them to the funeral director or service venue, include the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service, and keep the message short. Our guide to funeral flowers in NZ has wording ideas. Florists here also serve Waipawa and other towns in Central Hawke's Bay.
