Order flowersNapier, Ahuriri, is a city of about 66,400 people on the Hawke's Bay coast, rebuilt in Art Deco style after the 1931 earthquake. If you are sending flowers here, two things are worth knowing up front: Napier no longer has its own public hospital, and the warm, dry climate is hard on cut flowers left in the sun.

Napier Hospital on Hospital Hill closed in 1998, and most services moved to the hospital in Hastings. Central Napier has an urgent care clinic instead. So if someone from Napier has been admitted, they are most likely at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Flowers are not allowed in its intensive care unit, and no rule is published for other wards, so check with the ward before sending.
The Art Deco Festival Napier celebrates the 1930s architecture built after the earthquake. The next festival runs from 18 to 21 February 2027. Marine Parade, the tree-lined ocean boulevard with fountains and gardens along the waterfront, is at the centre of the city's summer life. On Napier Hill, the 18-acre Napier Botanical Gardens at 19 Spencer Road has walking tracks, a small aviary, a duck pond and the remnants of two historic wells once used to water the site.
Napier City Council looks after five cemeteries: Park Island, Western Hills, Taradale, Wharerangi and the Old Napier Cemetery. Park Island Cemetery holds the Earthquake Memorial to the people who died in the Hawke's Bay earthquake of 3 February 1931. Napier no longer has its own crematorium; cremations take place at Hastings Cemetery.
For a funeral, flowers are normally sent to the funeral home or the family. Our sympathy flower guide explains the customs.
Napier gets about 790 mm of rain a year and more than 2,300 sunshine hours. That is lovely for people but tough on a bouquet left on a sunny step. Add the recipient's phone number so the florist can reach them. Our flower care guide has tips for keeping flowers fresh in warm weather. More towns are listed on our Hawke's Bay page.
Napier spreads from the hill and the port out to suburbs such as Taradale, which has its own cemetery. Give the full street address and suburb, a phone number and any note about a gate or flat number. Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas, so if the flowers are for a set day, order early in the day and allow a little extra time.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Napier.
