Flowers for someone in Ōpōtiki

Ōpōtiki is a town of about 4,900 people in the eastern Bay of Plenty. Its name means 'the place of Pōtiki from afar', after Pōtiki-mai-tawhiti, said to have come from Hawaiki. It is the traditional centre of Te Whakatōhea, and a Church Missionary Society station was set up here in 1840. Here is what helps when sending flowers to the town.

At the meeting of two highways

Ōpōtiki sits at the junction of State Highway 2, which runs west to Whakatāne and inland to Gisborne, and State Highway 35, the East Cape coast road. Recipients along the coast road or inland may have rural RD addresses, which can take longer. Write the address exactly as the recipient does, add a phone number, and allow extra time; weekend delivery is limited in many rural areas.

Marae and tangihanga

Ōpōtiki has three marae, including Maromahue Marae (Te Poho o Kahungunu meeting house) and Te Rere Marae (Te Iringa). If you are sending condolences for a tangihanga, ask the whānau what is welcome; our tangihanga guide explains what to bring and what to write.

The town's cemeteries

  • Waitangi (Ōpōtiki Lawn Cemetery) on Waioeka Road is the council's largest, with RSA sections and a niche wall; burial plots are now full.
  • Kelly Street is the closed old military cemetery.
  • Te Ranginui Cemetery at Woodlands, opened in 2008, is the newest.

Flowers for a funeral are best sent to the funeral home or the family. See our sympathy flower guide for card wording.

East Cape addresses
