Sending flowers to Balclutha

Balclutha – Iwikatea – is a Clutha District town of about 4,460 people, about halfway between Dunedin and Gore on State Highway 1 and the Southern Scenic Route. The Clutha River, the largest river in New Zealand by volume, flows through the town, and most of Balclutha lies on "the flat" inside a wide loop of the river, with North Balclutha and Rosebank on the hills either side. The town serves the farming region of the lower Clutha, so many recipients live out of town.

Clutha Health First on Charlotte Street

Clutha Health First at 9–11 Charlotte Street runs a 14-bed inpatient ward for acute and general medical care, rehabilitation and palliative care. We have not found a published flower rule, so check with the ward before sending. For someone receiving palliative care, the family may have views on flowers and scents – a quiet word with them first is kind. It is also the nearest hospital for Milton.

Two aged-care homes

  • Holmdene, a Presbyterian Support Otago Enliven care home at 15 Elizabeth Street – rest home and hospital-level care.
  • Clutha Views Lifecare & Village, 64 Essex Street – rest home, hospital and dementia care alongside a retirement village.

Include the resident's full name and the home's name on the order. A small arrangement or a pot plant is usually easiest in a resident's room.

Balclutha Cemetery and war graves

Balclutha Cemetery is on Totara Avenue and holds seven Commonwealth war graves, two from the First World War and five from the Second. For Anzac Day tributes, see our Anzac Day guide. For a funeral, flowers usually go to the funeral home or the family home.

Farm addresses in the lower Clutha

For farms, use the RD number where the suburb would usually go, and remember that the town on a rural address is where the delivery round is based. Rural addresses (RD numbers) can take longer, and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays. Balclutha is also the nearest large town to the Catlins – yellow-eyed penguins come ashore to breed in the Balclutha area, and The Nuggets are at nearby Kaka Point.

The name comes from Scottish Gaelic Baile Chluaidh ("Clyde Town"); the town was first called Clutha Ferry after the 1857 river ferry. More towns are on our Otago region page.
