Sending flowers to Wānaka

Wānaka is a lake town in the Queenstown Lakes District, about 120 km from Queenstown. It has grown fast, from 9,552 people at the 2018 census to about 13,200 in 2025. For a while it was called Pembroke, and it went back to Wānaka on 1 September 1940 to reduce confusion between the names of the town and the lake. It is dry, sunny and cold in winter, and it has no hospital of its own; those things shape how best to send flowers here.

No hospital in Wānaka: Dunstan Hospital in Clyde

Wānaka has no hospital. Dunstan Hospital in Clyde, run by Central Otago Health Services Ltd, serves Wānaka and Central Otago. Flowers are welcome there, but avoid lilies and strongly scented arrangements. The town's GP practices are at Wanaka Lakes Health Centre, 23 Cardrona Valley Road.

From 35 °C summers to frosty lake mornings

Wānaka gets about 682 mm of rain a year, half the national average, and around 2,099 hours of sunshine. Its highest recorded temperature is 35.2 °C, in January 2018, while winter daily highs sit around 8–10 °C, with cold, frosty nights and frequent snow. A bouquet left outside on a winter morning may freeze, and one left in summer sun will wilt, so add the recipient's phone number and a note about where flowers can be left safely. Our flower care guide has tips for both.

A&P Show in March, Warbirds at Easter

The Wānaka A&P Show is held at the Wānaka Showgrounds and Pembroke Park on the lakeshore; the 90th show is on 12–13 March 2027. Warbirds Over Wanaka is held every two years over Easter weekend at Wanaka Airport, and the next airshow, in 2028, marks its 40th anniversary. Ski season brings visitors to Treble Cone and Cardrona. On these busy weekends, ordering early in the day helps.

Lavender in late November

Wānaka Lavender Farm was set up on bare pasture around 2012 and now covers 12 hectares. Its lavender starts to bloom around late November, a reminder that early summer is a lovely time for flowers in the area. It also lines up with the end of the school year at Mount Aspiring College, which has about 1,318 students; our graduation flowers guide has ideas.

Sympathy flowers in the Upper Clutha

Queenstown Lakes District Council runs the local cemeteries. For a funeral, send flowers to the funeral home or the family home rather than the cemetery. Our sympathy flower guide explains card wording and timing. For a nearby town, see Lake Hāwea.
