Order flowersMilton, once called Tokomairiro, is a Clutha District town of about 2,120 people, 50 km south of Dunedin on State Highway 1 and the second-largest town in South Otago after Balclutha. It began in the 1850s as a milling town and boomed in the 1860s gold rush as a staging post for the goldfields near Lawrence. Its streets are named after British poets – Spenser, Johnson and Chaucer Streets among them – and its neighbouring localities are Tokoiti, 1 km south-east (the old town of Fairfax), and Milburn, 2 km north.

The nearest hospital is Clutha Health First at 9–11 Charlotte Street, Balclutha, which provides inpatient and maternity care. For life-threatening emergencies, the closest emergency departments are in Dunedin or Gore. We have not found a published flower rule for Clutha Health First, so check with the ward before sending. If your patient is at Dunedin Hospital, many wards do not allow fresh flowers – see our Dunedin Hospital page. More on Balclutha on our Balclutha page.
Ashlea Grove Rest Home at 41 Centennial Avenue provides residential aged care; include the resident's full name and the home's name on the order, and pick something that fits a bedside table.
Clutha District Council runs the Fairfax (Milton) cemetery and lists it at Knoll Street, with Milton Community Library as the local contact. Council rules allow wreaths and other floral tributes on a plot for 10 days after an interment (or another period the council decides), after which they are removed. Planters and flowers are welcome on the concrete beam, but the council asks that no plantings, ornaments or glass containers be placed in front of headstones on its lawn cemeteries – worth knowing if you are sending flowers for a graveside visit. For the funeral itself, ask the family or funeral director where to send them; our funeral flower guide covers card wording.
The Tokomairiro A&P Show is held each December – the 155th show was in 2020 – and the 2026 show is on Saturday 12 December at the showgrounds on Union Street (SH1). Summers are mild, with a February mean maximum of 20.4 °C, while July nights average 0.3 °C. Around Christmas, order early in the week, and use the RD number for farm addresses – rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays.
Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church, a Gothic church by architect R.A. Lawson, is Milton's most obvious landmark; when built it was the tallest building at such a southern latitude in the world. The otherwise straight main street (Union Street, SH1) jogs a whole road-width to the west in the north of town – 'The Kink' – for reasons still disputed. Milton Pottery (1873–1915) made some of the country's finest ceramics, and in February 1878 Milton and Dunedin were the first two centres in New Zealand linked by long-distance telephone. Tokomairiro High School (Years 7–13) is the town's secondary school. More towns on our Otago region page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
