Order flowersŌamaru is a Waitaki District town of about 14,300 people, known for its whitestone buildings: many public buildings are made of Oamaru stone, a local limestone, and the Victorian precinct is counted among New Zealand's most impressive streetscapes. It also has public gardens dating from 1876 and a hospital on Holmes Hill. Below we have gathered the local details that help with a birthday bunch, a get-well posy or sympathy flowers.

Ōamaru Hospital is at 8 Stuart Street, Holmes Hill. Health New Zealand says: "Due to the risk that fresh flowers pose to patients with respiratory disorders, there may be restrictions in place. If you are bringing flowers in or using florist delivery services, check with reception." So check with the ward before sending, and include the patient's full name. See our Ōamaru Hospital page.
Eldernet lists six residential care homes in and around the town:
Write the home's name and the resident's room on the order, and choose a compact arrangement that fits a bedside table.
Ōamaru Public Gardens opened in 1876 on 34 acres reserved when the town was surveyed in 1858. Highlights include a rose garden, a rhododendron dell and azalea lawn, a native fernery, and a Chinese garden linked to a red lacquer bridge. The gardens also hold a Wonderland statue by a Scottish sculptor, gifted in 1926, and an Italian marble fountain. If the person you are sending to loves the gardens, roses in spring and summer, or a potted azalea, echo something they already enjoy.
Ōamaru holds an annual mask festival each July, the Midwinter Masquerade, and a Victorian Heritage fête in November, as well as a yearly steampunk festival – in August 2016 the town set a world record for the largest gathering of steampunks. Busy weekends and public holidays can limit deliveries in many areas, so order early in the week for a firm date. The town's three secondary schools, Waitaki Boys' High School (founded 1883), Waitaki Girls' High School and St Kevin's College, are worth noting if you are sending congratulations at the end of the school year.
Waitaki District Council manages 11 cemeteries in the district, and its burial records cover Ōamaru's two, the Old Cemetery and the Lawn Cemetery. Funeral flowers usually go to the funeral home or to the family; our funeral and sympathy flower guide explains what is customary and how to word the card. For rural Waitaki addresses, use the RD number; rural addresses can take longer. Sending further south as well? See Dunedin and the Otago region.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Oamaru.
