Order flowersMosgiel sits on the Taieri Plain about 17 km west of central Dunedin, and is home to about 15,100 people. The town grew up around the Mosgiel Woollen Company mill, founded by Arthur John Burns in 1871 – the second woollen mill to open in New Zealand. Today it has its own gardens, schools and rest homes, but for hospital care it looks to Dunedin, so the Dunedin Hospital flower rules are the first thing to check for many Mosgiel orders.

Mosgiel is served by Dunedin Hospital, the main base hospital for Otago and Southland. Because fresh flowers pose a risk to patients with respiratory disorders, Health New Zealand says they cannot be brought into the intensive care unit, high dependency unit, oncology ward, cardiovascular ward, respiratory ward, surgical ward, medical ward or multi-bed rooms. The hospital asks anyone using a florist to check with the ward reception, so check with the ward before sending.
Often the better plan is to send flowers to the patient's Mosgiel home for when they come back. Our Dunedin Hospital page has the full wording.
Eldernet lists five residential care homes with a Mosgiel address:
Put the resident's full name and room on the order. A small arrangement or a potted plant is easier for staff to place than a large bouquet.
Climate records for Mosgiel, taken at the Invermay station, show a mean January high of 20.1 °C and a mean July low of just 0.6 °C, with about 817 mm of rain a year. Flowers left outside on a frosty morning may not survive the wait.
Memorial Park, also known as the Mosgiel Memorial Gardens, is a public park in central Mosgiel near Gordon Road, with gardens, picnic areas and walking paths. For a keen local gardener, flowers in season are a thoughtful choice – our seasonal flower guide shows what is at its best each month.
Taieri College, formed in 2004, is the town's state secondary school for years 7 to 13 – worth knowing if you are congratulating a student at the end of the school year. Saddle Hill marks the eastern edge of the greater Mosgiel area, and R.A. Lawson's East Taieri Presbyterian Church (1870) stands near the State Highway 1 turnoff.
For sympathy flowers, Hope and Sons has its Kōwhai Lounge, a space for gatherings after a funeral, at the Dukes Road Crematorium, 169 Dukes Road North. Our funeral flower guide covers card wording. Sending to the city as well? See our Dunedin page, or the Otago region.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Mosgiel.
