Order flowersThe township of Lake Hāwea sits at the southern end of the lake, 18 km north-east of Wānaka, and has grown quickly: the 2006 census counted 552 people, and the June 2025 estimate, on a wider boundary, was 2,500. The lake – about 35 km long and up to 392 m deep – was artificially raised by 20 metres in 1958, when the Hāwea dam gates opened, to store water for hydroelectric generation downstream. Many of the places that matter for a flower order, from rest homes to the funeral director and the A&P show, are in Wānaka.

NIWA 1981–2010 normals for Lake Hāwea (350 m elevation) give a mean July daily minimum of −0.2 °C and a July mean daily maximum of around 7.5 °C, against a mean January daily maximum of 21.3 °C; the annual mean is 10.2 °C and rainfall about 877 mm. In winter, ask for flowers to be handed over rather than left on a doorstep, and include the recipient's phone number. Lake Hāwea's postcode is 9382; for rural properties around Hāwea Flat use the RD number – rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays.
Our data lists no aged-care home in Lake Hāwea itself. Two are in Wānaka:
Healthpoint lists no public hospital in Wānaka; the Central Lakes public hospitals are Dunstan Hospital in Clyde, Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown and Maniototo Hospital in Ranfurly. Dunstan Hospital says visitors are welcome to bring flowers but asks you to avoid lilies and strongly scented arrangements – see our Dunstan Hospital page. For deliveries in Wānaka, see our Wānaka page.
Lake Hāwea Cemetery is administered through the Hāwea Trust, which holds its burial records; Queenstown Lakes District Council refers enquiries there. Wānaka Cemetery is in Stone Street, Wānaka, and Affinity Funerals has a Wānaka office at 7 McCormick Street. Hāwea Flat, 5 km south of the lake, is named for Hāwea-i-te-raki, an ancestor of the Ngāti Hāwea hapū; its churches date from 1892 (St Patrick's Catholic) and 1938 (St Ninian's Presbyterian). For funeral flowers, ask the family or funeral director where to send them; our funeral flower guide helps with the rest.
Lake Hāwea Community Centre at 28 Myra Street runs the Hāwea Indoor Winter Markets, started in 2020; in 2025 they were held on Sunday 20 July and Sunday 28 September. Hāwea Domain, about 44 hectares of recreation reserve off Domain Road, is kept as open space for the growing community. The Wānaka A&P Show at the Wānaka Showgrounds is held in March; the 2027 show is on 12–13 March. More towns on our Otago region page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
