Flowers for a patient at Oamaru Hospital
Oamaru Hospital, at 8 Steward Street, is a rural hospital run by Health NZ in the Southern district. Unlike the bigger Southern district hospitals, it does not publish a list of banned wards. Instead, it gives a gentler warning and asks you to check first.
Order by 2 pm on weekdays (11 am Saturdays) for same-day delivery in many areas
- Ward rules quoted from the hospital
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

Flowers may be restricted because of the risk to patients with respiratory disorders; check with reception first.
“Due to the risk that fresh flowers pose to patients with respiratory disorders, there may be restrictions in place. If you are bringing flowers in or using florist delivery services, check with reception.”
"There may be restrictions in place"
Health NZ's page for the hospital says: "Due to the risk that fresh flowers pose to patients with respiratory disorders, there may be restrictions in place. If you are bringing flowers in or using florist delivery services, check with reception."
So flowers are not ruled out, but they depend on the patient and the room. Check with the ward before sending; reception is on 03 433 0290.
Questions to ask when you ring
- Is the patient in a shared room or a single room?
- Are there patients with breathing problems nearby?
- Would a small arrangement be fine, or would a card be better?
Having the patient's full name ready makes the call quicker.
If the answer is yes, choose a compact arrangement in its own container so staff do not need to find a vase, and keep the scent light. Put the patient's full name on the order with the hospital's street address, 8 Steward Street, Oamaru.
Long visiting hours
Visiting hours are 8am to 8pm daily, which gives you plenty of time to visit in person and ask the staff on the spot before you take flowers to the room.
Flowers delivered at home
If the answer is no, flowers sent to the patient's home after discharge are a lovely welcome back. See flower delivery in Oamaru. Rural addresses with an RD number can take longer, so allow extra time, and order early in the day. For allergy-friendly ideas, read our hay fever guide.
The larger Dunedin Hospital publishes a much stricter list of areas where fresh flowers are not allowed.
Parking and the main entrance
The hospital is at 8 Steward Street. Health NZ says car parking is available on Steward Street, with two more car parks off Steward Street, and there is a pick-up and drop-off zone at the main entrance. The radiology department has its own entrance on Severn Street, where three spots are reserved for radiology patients.
Services at Oamaru Hospital
Health NZ lists a 24-hour emergency department, maternity and birthing services, surgery, mental health, radiology and district nursing. Because the flower warning is about patients with respiratory disorders, it is sensible to say which ward the person is on when you ring reception on 03 433 0290.
The hospital and grounds are smoke and vape free. Interpretation services are available 24 hours a day in more than 55 languages, including New Zealand Sign Language, at no cost for eligible patients.
If flowers turn out to be unsuitable, visiting is open from 8am to 8pm, so you have a long window to deliver a card in person.
