Flower delivery to Dannevirke

Dannevirke, Tāmaki-nui-a-Rua, is the main centre of the Tararua District, with about 5,640 people. It was founded on 15 October 1872 by Danish, Norwegian and Swedish settlers in a clearing of the Seventy Mile Bush, and it is named after a Viking-age fortification in Denmark. It serves the dairy, beef and sheep farms around it, which shapes how deliveries work here.

Dannevirke Community Hospital and rest homes

Dannevirke Community Hospital at 24 Barraud Street is the local public hospital and health centre. We have not found a published flower rule for it, so ring ahead before sending and include the patient's full name.

Two facilities provide aged residential care:

  • Eileen Mary Masonic Care, 44 Trafalgar Street
  • Rahiri Lifecare, 348 High Street

A small arrangement in its own vase is easiest for residents and staff.

Cemeteries and marae

Mangatera Cemetery on Cemetery Road is Dannevirke's main council cemetery; the smaller Settlers Cemetery is on Dagmar Street. The town also has three Rangitāne marae: Kaitoki, Mākirikiri and Whiti te Rā (also called Poherau). If a farewell is held on a marae, our tangihanga guide explains what to bring and what to write. For other funerals, see our sympathy flower guide, and send flowers to the funeral home or family rather than the cemetery.

Cool summers, frosty winters

Because of its altitude, Dannevirke has cooler summers than other eastern North Island towns and regular winter frosts, though snow is rare. A bouquet left outside on a frosty morning can be damaged, so add a phone number and a note about a sheltered spot. Our flower care guide has more tips.

Farm deliveries

Dannevirke was once nicknamed the 'sleeper town' because it supplied tōtara railway sleepers for the Napier–Wellington line, and at one stage the area had 50 sawmills. Today many recipients live on farms with RD addresses. Write 'RD' and the number without dots, followed by the mailtown and postcode. Rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses in 2024, so a weekday is safest. More towns are on our Manawatū-Whanganui page.

Writing the card

Dannevirke was founded by Scandinavian settlers and is home to three Rangitāne marae. A short, personal message usually means more than a long one. If you are writing for a tangihanga at Kaitoki, Mākirikiri or Whiti te Rā marae, our tangihanga guide has wording ideas.
