Sending flowers to Winton, Southland

Winton sits on State Highway 6 between Invercargill and Queenstown, 30 km north of Invercargill, with State Highway 96 linking it east to Mataura and west to Ohai. It is named after Thomas Winton, a local stockman who farmed in the area in the 1850s, and today dairy farming is the staple of the district. About 2,560 people live in the urban area (June 2025 estimate), in the Southland region. Winton's climate is generally warmer, drier and calmer than Invercargill or Southland's coastal districts, which draws retiring farmers to the town.

Southland Hospital: check the ward first

The nearest public hospital is Southland Hospital on Kew Road, Invercargill. Health New Zealand says fresh flowers cannot be brought into the intensive care unit, high dependency unit, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical or medical wards, or multi-bed rooms, because of the risk to patients with respiratory disorders. If you are using a florist delivery, check with the ward reception first. In many cases, flowers to the patient's home in Winton are the simpler choice.

Rata Park Care Home

Rata Park Care Home at 94 Gap Road East provides rest home and hospital-level care. Note that its address is a rural one – 94 Gap Road East, RD 1, Winton – so include the RD number on your order. For a resident, a compact arrangement in a vase is easiest for staff, and the resident's full name should go on the card.

Two cemeteries and a local funeral home

Winton Cemetery is off State Highway 6 at the north end of the town; Minnie Dean, the only woman ever hanged in New Zealand, is buried there. East Winton Cemetery, the town's newer cemetery from about the 1950s after the old one filled, is on Devereux Road – head east out Browns Road towards Gore for about 4 km. It accepts new burials.

Winton & Districts Funeral Services is at 306 Great North Road, first built in 1981 and part of J Fraser & Son since 2012. It serves Central, Western and Northern Southland and Fiordland, including Te Anau. Send funeral flowers there with the full name of the person who has died and the service date. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with the card.

Cool winters and show day

Winters are cool: July is the coldest month at an average of around 4.8 °C, while January averages 14.5 °C, and the town gets about 912 mm of rain a year. Ask for a handover in person so flowers are not left out in the cold.

The Winton A&P Show is held at the end of January at the Winton Racecourse, having moved from early November because of wet weather. The Winton A&P Association held its first show on 16 April 1875. For dairy-farm addresses, use the RD number exactly as the recipient writes it and allow extra time. Sending to the city too? See our Invercargill page.
