“no flowers — patients with fragile lungs are often present”

Critical Care is a flower-free zone

The Critical Care unit (ICU and HDU), on Level 4 of the Meade Clinical Centre, says simply: "no flowers — patients with fragile lungs are often present". The unit also asks visitors to minimise excess personal belongings or large, cumbersome gifts because space is restricted.

Critical Care is a 24-hour unit with no set visiting hours, so talk to the staff about the best time to come.

A florist inside the hospital

Health NZ lists a florist and gift shop on Level 1 of the Meade Clinical Centre, open 9am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. No rule for the other wards has been published, so check with the ward before sending.

Addressing a delivery

When you contact the hospital about a patient, Health NZ asks you to give the full name of the patient and the ward they are on, if you know it. Put the same details on a flower order, along with the hospital's Pembroke Street address. The main number is 07 839 8899.

Visiting times

Waikato Hospital visiting hours are 11am to 1:30pm and 4pm to 8pm, 7 days a week. The break in the middle of the day gives patients time to rest, so plan a visit with flowers either side of it.

Beyond the hospital

For flowers to a home in the city, see flower delivery in Hamilton. For towns across the region, such as Cambridge and Te Awamutu; our Waikato region page lists them all.

Parking and drop-off

Health NZ says parking at Waikato Hospital is extremely limited during normal business hours, and recommends drop-off zones or other transport. Five drop-off areas are listed: the bottom of the Meade Clinical Centre, the Older Persons and Rehabilitation Building, the Elizabeth Rothwell Building, the Emergency Department entrance and the Transit Lounge. Bus routes including the Orbiter and Comet serve the hospital, and community health shuttles run too.

Finding the right ward

The hospital houses maternity, children's health and mental health services alongside many specialist departments. Because Critical Care is the one area with a published flower ban, the first question to ask is which unit the patient is in.

  • For news of a relative or friend in hospital, Health NZ gives a patient enquiries number: 07 839 8666.
  • Ward staff can arrange visiting outside the standard hours if you give notice.
  • Seven cafés operate across the campus, and most are cashless.

If flowers are not suitable, the florist and gift shop in the Meade Clinical Centre, Level 1, is also an option for a card or small gift.
