Flowers for someone in Foxton

Foxton – Te Awahou – is the oldest European settlement in the southern Manawatū and was named Foxton in 1866. It is in Horowhenua District, part of the Manawatū-Whanganui region, with an urban population estimated at 3,520 in June 2025. The town calls itself the Flax Capital of New Zealand: up to about 50 flax mills once worked NZ flax (Phormium tenax) in the area, and the Flax Stripper Museum tells the story. In the Cultural Park, De Molen – a full-size working replica of a Dutch windmill completed in 2003 – grinds stone-ground flour.

Ihakara Gardens and the old cemetery

Ihakara Gardens, at the north end of Main Street, were presented to the citizens of Foxton in 1919 by Te Aputa Ihakara, Karaitiana Te Ahu and Rangiahuta Pataka. The cemetery within the gardens is the oldest used by Europeans in the Manawatū, with graves of notable Māori and Pākehā from Te Awahou village.

Foxton Cemetery: location and hours

Foxton Cemetery is on the corner of Avenue Road and Hickford Road – turn east off State Highway 1 into Avenue Road. Horowhenua District cemeteries are open from 7.30am until dusk all year, so plan any graveside visit with flowers within those hours. For a funeral service, send flowers to the funeral director or venue with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with the card.

Rest home and retirement village

  • Lonsdale Total Care Centre, 14 Robinson Street, provides rest home and hospital-level aged residential care.
  • Te Awahou Masonic Village, 79 Main Street, is a retirement village run by the Masonic Villages Trust.

For someone in care, a compact arrangement in a vase is easiest for staff. For a retirement village resident living independently, a regular bouquet to their unit works well – include the unit number with the address.

Wind, sand and sunshine

Foxton's sandy country gets about 2,000 sunshine hours and 900 mm of rain a year, and west-north-west winds have built New Zealand's most extensive transgressive dune system. Wind dries cut flowers quickly, so add a phone number for a handover in person. Near Foxton Beach, the Manawatū Estuary is a wetland of international importance – one of seven Ramsar sites in New Zealand, with 93 bird species recorded.
