Flowers and Palmerston North Hospital
Palmerston North Hospital, at 50 Ruahine Street in Roslyn, first opened on 27 November 1893 with 25 inpatient beds across four wards. By 2020 it had 354 inpatient beds. If you want to send flowers to someone staying there, the hospital's patient brochure gives a short but important message.

Most wards at Palmerston North Hospital are flower free; check with the ward before sending or bringing flowers.
“Most wards are flower free - please check before someone sends or brings in flowers.”
"Most wards are flower free"
The patient information brochure says: "Most wards are flower free - please check before someone sends or brings in flowers." No list of wards is published, so you cannot tell from the outside which ones accept flowers. Check with the ward before sending. The hospital's number is 06 356 9169.
The brochure also notes that different wards may have different guidelines, and suggests checking with the nurse if you have questions.
If the answer is no
- Send flowers to the patient's home so they are there when they are discharged.
- Write a card the nurses can pass on.
- Plan a bouquet for a later milestone, such as the first week home.
Our Palmerston North flower delivery page covers the city. Rural Manawatū addresses with an RD number can take longer, so allow extra time.
Visiting hours at Palmerston North Hospital
Inpatient visiting hours are 10am to 8pm, 7 days a week. If you are bringing flowers in person, ask at the ward desk before you take them to the bedside.
When you ring, have the patient's full name ready and the ward name if you know it. Staff can then tell you whether that particular ward accepts flowers, or whether a card or a delivery to home would be better.
Low-pollen and allergy-friendly choices
Wards often restrict flowers because of infection and allergy concerns. If a ward does say yes, a small arrangement with little pollen is the kindest choice for shared rooms. Our guide to hay fever season and sending flowers explains what to look for. For the wider region, see Manawatū-Whanganui.
