Flowers and Rangiora Health Hub's maternity unit
Rangiora Health Hub, at 161 Ashley Street, Rangiora, is home to a primary birthing unit run by Health NZ. The maternity unit is the hub's only inpatient ward. If you want to congratulate new parents, flowers at home are the safer plan.

- No flowers on the wards: send them home instead
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

The only inpatient unit is the maternity unit, and the archived Canterbury DHB rule (2022) bans flowers and potted plants in the Rangiora community maternity unit. The current Health NZ page says nothing. Suggest delivery to the home.
“Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in any wards in Christchurch Women's Hospital. This includes the Maternity Ward and Birthing Suite and all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield.”
Why flowers do not go to the ward
The former Canterbury DHB has stated, on a page last updated in June 2022 and now archived: "Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in any wards in Christchurch Women's Hospital. This includes the Maternity Ward and Birthing Suite and all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield."
Health NZ's current page for the hub says nothing about flowers. The old rule may still be followed, so treat the unit as flower-free unless the staff tell you otherwise. If in doubt, check with the ward before sending; the hub's number is 03 313 7299.
A welcome-home bouquet
Flowers waiting at home are a lovely way to mark the first days with a new baby. Some tips:
- Ask a family member for the home address and a good day to deliver.
- Pick a low-maintenance arrangement that does not need a vase.
- If there are pets in the house, see our pet-safe flowers guide.
For deliveries in the town, see flower delivery in Rangiora. Rural addresses with an RD number can take longer.
Visiting the birthing unit
Recommended visiting hours for the maternity unit are 3pm to 7pm. A main support person may remain overnight.
Other maternity care in Canterbury
The same archived rule covered the maternity units at Ashburton, Kaikōura and Darfield. At Christchurch Women's Hospital, Health NZ now bans flowers in every ward.
What the hub offers
Health NZ lists a primary birthing unit for uncomplicated pregnancies, a community maternity unit and a public health nursing service. The hub has no emergency department; for a critical emergency, people are directed to Christchurch Hospital or to call 111.
After-hours urgent care is available at clinics in Christchurch (Madras Street and Riccarton), about 25 to 30 minutes away.
Arriving at the hub
There are car parks on either side of the main entrance, and drop-off is available at the main entry. Free interpreter services are available for people who speak another language or need New Zealand Sign Language.
Two numbers are useful. General enquiries are 03 313 7299, and the maternity unit is 03 311 8650. One primary support person may stay overnight if they wish, which is worth knowing before you plan a visit.
If you are sending a gift to new parents at home afterwards, our Rangiora delivery page has the practical details.
