Flowers for Darfield Community Facility
Darfield Community Facility, at 31 Mathias Street in Darfield, provides hospital-level aged residential care for the Selwyn area. If you have a parent or grandparent living there, flowers are a natural way to keep in touch. The only written flower rule we found dates from when the facility was listed with a community maternity unit.

- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

The archived Canterbury DHB rule (2022) listed a Darfield community maternity unit as flower-free; the facility is now described as hospital-level aged residential care. Check with the facility.
“Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in any wards in Christchurch Women's Hospital. This includes the Maternity Ward and Birthing Suite and all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield.”
An older rule for the maternity unit
A Canterbury DHB page, last updated in June 2022 and now available only as an archived copy, has stated: "Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in any wards in Christchurch Women's Hospital. This includes the Maternity Ward and Birthing Suite and all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield."
Health NZ now describes the facility as providing hospital-level aged residential care, and its current page says nothing about flowers. Whether the old rule still applies to any part of the facility is unclear, so check with the ward before sending. Phone 03 318 8503.
Visiting and arrival
Visiting hours are 10am to 8pm. Ring the doorbell on arrival. If you bring flowers in person, ask staff where they can go; a small arrangement in the resident's room is usually easiest to enjoy.
Visiting in person also gives you a chance to see how much space there is and what the resident would like next time. Many families find that a small, regular bunch keeps a room cheerful without crowding a bedside table.
Flowers for older residents
- Choose a compact arrangement in its own container; it is easier for residents and staff to care for.
- Keep the scent gentle in shared spaces.
- Potted plants were covered by the same old maternity-unit rule, so ask before sending a plant.
- A regular small bunch can mean more than one large one.
Around Selwyn
For deliveries to homes in the town see flower delivery in Darfield. Rural addresses with an RD number can take longer, so order early in the day. Ellesmere Community Facility in Leeston is another Selwyn facility with its own page.
Parking and arrival
Health NZ says there are car parks on site for patients, including mobility parks, while car parks for visitors are on Mathias Street. On arrival, ring the doorbell. No reception desk is described.
Visitors should not come if they are unwell, and are encouraged to wear a surgical or medical mask and use hand sanitiser.
What the facility does and does not do
The facility provides hospital-level aged residential care. It does not have an emergency department, and the page directs emergencies to Christchurch Hospital or 111. Meals on Wheels is available with a referral and needs assessment.
Our Darfield flower delivery page covers home addresses in the township.
