Flowers and Kaikōura Health
Kaikōura Health is the town's rural hospital at 25 Deal Street, Kaikōura. It is a small facility, and Health NZ's current page for it says nothing about flowers. The only written rule we found is an older Canterbury DHB page that covered the maternity unit, so a short phone call before you order is the safest approach.
Order by 2 pm on weekdays (11 am Saturdays) for same-day delivery in many areas
- Ward rules quoted from the hospital
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

Archived Canterbury DHB rule (2022): no flowers or potted plants in the Kaikōura community maternity unit. The current Health NZ page says nothing. Check with staff.
“Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in any wards in Christchurch Women's Hospital. This includes the Maternity Ward and Birthing Suite and all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield.”
What the archived Canterbury page said
The former Canterbury District Health Board has stated, on a page last updated on 8 June 2022, that flowers and potted plants were not allowed in Christchurch Women's Hospital or in "all Community Maternity Units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura, Darfield."
That page is now only available as an archived copy and its wording is not on today's Health NZ page. It may still be followed, so check with the ward before sending, especially for a new mother.
Calling ahead in a small town
The main number for Kaikōura Health is 03 319 3500. Nursing staff can tell you whether flowers are fine for the person you are thinking of, and whether a small arrangement or a card would be better.
If flowers are not suitable, a bunch delivered to the person's home when they are discharged is a lovely alternative. See our Kaikōura flower delivery page for the town.
Visiting hours at Kaikōura Health
- 10am to 12pm and 3pm to 8pm, every day.
- Contact the nursing staff if you need to visit outside these hours.
Ordering from out of town
If you are ordering from out of town, order early in the day, use the full Deal Street address and the patient's name, and remember that weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas. For the wider area, see our Canterbury region page.
What Kaikōura Health provides
Health NZ describes Kaikōura Health as a base for several services:
- a GP clinic (enrolment required)
- a primary birthing unit for uncomplicated pregnancies, and a community maternity unit
- aged care
- public health nursing
There is no emergency department. For life-threatening emergencies dial 111, and for other concerns call Healthline on 0800 611 116. The maternity unit is the part the archived Canterbury rule covered, so ask about it before sending flowers to a new mother.
Visiting maternity and parking
For maternity, support people may visit at any time, while general visitors are recommended to come between 3pm and 7pm. Free car parking is available in front of the building and along Deal Street, and there are bicycle stands at the side.
Contact numbers
Reception is 03 319 3500 and the general practice is 03 319 3501. Free Wi-Fi is available, and interpreters, including New Zealand Sign Language, can be arranged at no cost through the healthcare team.
