Sending flowers to Rangiora

Rangiora, about 29 km north of Christchurch, is the largest town and council seat of Waimakariri District, with about 19,300 residents. Two things about it surprise many senders: it holds New Zealand's highest official temperature, and its health hub's only inpatient unit is a maternity unit where flowers have been banned. Here is what to know.

New baby? Send to the home, not the Health Hub

Rangiora Health Hub on Ashley Street has a community maternity unit, where recommended visiting hours are 3pm to 7pm. It has no emergency department. An old Canterbury DHB page (archived; last updated June 2022) said flowers and potted plants were not allowed in community maternity units, naming the one at Rangiora. The current Health NZ page does not mention flowers, but the rule has not been withdrawn either.

For a new arrival, the kindest option is to send flowers to the family home once parents and baby are settled. If you want to try the unit, check with the staff first. Our Rangiora Health Hub page has the source wording.

Record heat and summer deliveries

Rangiora recorded New Zealand's highest official temperature, 42.4 °C, on 7 February 1973. Hot days are hard on cut flowers, so in summer:

  • choose an address where someone will be home to put the flowers in water;
  • add a phone number so the driver can call instead of leaving them in the sun;
  • pass on the care tips in our guide to making flowers last in a Kiwi summer.

For farm addresses around the town, use the RD number as NZ Post asks, and remember that rural addresses can take longer and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays.

Victoria Park on Percival Street

Victoria Park was established in 1902 to mark the coronation of King Edward VII. Its gates and its 1907 band rotunda are Category 2 heritage items. If you are writing a card to someone who has lived in Rangiora all their life, a mention of the park may bring back memories.
