Flowers at Burwood Hospital, Christchurch

Burwood Hospital, at 300 Burwood Road in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, takes a more relaxed line on flowers than the city's central hospital. Most patients can receive them, but a handful of units are off limits and two wards ask you to check first.

Flowers are restricted in some areas

Flowers allowed in most of Burwood, but not in the admitting unit, PACU/recovery or progressive care unit; check first for the spinal unit (Ward FG) and brain injury ward (Ward CG).

“Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in the following wards and units: admitting unit; post-anaesthetic care unit and recovery unit; progressive care unit. Check with ward staff for Ward FG (spinal unit) and Ward CG (brain injury).”

Units where flowers cannot go

According to Health NZ, "Flowers and potted plants are not allowed in the following wards and units":

  • admitting unit
  • post-anaesthetic care unit and recovery unit
  • progressive care unit

Potted plants follow the same restrictions as cut flowers. These are areas where patients are being admitted, waking from an anaesthetic or needing closer monitoring, so it makes sense to wait until the person has moved to a general ward, or to send flowers home instead.

Spinal unit and brain injury ward

For Ward FG (spinal unit) and Ward CG (brain injury), the hospital asks you to check with ward staff. Patients on these wards are often in for longer stays, so flowers can mean a lot, but check with the ward before sending and follow what the nurses advise.

Fresh flowers from the volunteers' shop

The volunteers' gift shop sells gifts, clothing, magazines, toiletries, fresh flowers and limited New Zealand Post services. It is open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm, which is handy if you want to pick something up on the way to a weekday visit.
