Order flowersNgongotahā sits on the western shore of Lake Rotorua, about 10 km north-west of the Rotorua CBD, and is treated as a suburb of Rotorua. Locals call the village of about 5,280 people the "Sunny side of the Mountain". Its name comes from the legend of the explorer Īhenga, who was offered a drink from a calabash on Mount Ngongotahā – ngongo means to drink and tahā means calabash.

The CARE Village at 32 Taui Street opened in September 2017 on the shores of Lake Rotorua. It is modelled on the Dutch De Hogeweyk dementia village and offers rest home, hospital and dementia care. When sending flowers to a resident, include their full name and the village's name, and consider a simple, sturdy arrangement or a plant. If the resident lives with dementia, staff can advise what will be safe and enjoyed.
Kauae Cemetery at 365–383 Ngongotahā Road was originally a Ngāti Whakaue burial ground before becoming a public cemetery in 1924. Rotorua Lakes Council manages it for the Kauae Cemetery Trust Board, and part of it is kept for current Ngāti Whakaue burials. The Ngongotahā area has six marae, most of them Ngāti Whakaue hapū, while Tarimano Marae is Ngāti Rangiwewehi.
If a death is being marked at a marae, ask the whānau what is appropriate before sending flowers; our tangihanga guide explains the basics. Rotorua Crematorium is in Rotorua, at 160 Sala Street; it was opened in 1963 by the Rotorua City Council on part of the Sala Street cemetery reserve.
The nearest hospital is Rotorua Hospital on Pukeroa Street in Rotorua, about 10 km away, which has an emergency department. Its intensive care page says: "Do not bring flowers and plants because they can create a risk of infection." No rule is published for other wards, so check with the ward before sending. See our Rotorua Hospital page.
The Mount Ngongotahā Jubilee Track climbs through a scenic reserve whose first section is unlogged native forest, including a rātā tree 40 metres tall. The Ngongotahā Stream, which flows through the village centre into Lake Rotorua, is one of the most heavily fished areas in New Zealand for trout. For someone who loves the bush, our guide to New Zealand's native flowers has ideas. More nearby on our Rotorua page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Ngongotahā.
