Daffodils in the cemeteries

In June 2021 Christchurch City Council planted 40,000 'Grand Monarch' daffodil bulbs in Lyttelton's Anglican and Catholic-and-Public cemeteries, to flower in late winter or early spring. If you are visiting a grave at that time of year, the cemeteries will already be full of yellow.

  • Lyttelton Anglican Cemetery, 79 Canterbury Street, opened in 1850; the first burial was John Williams, who died two days after the First Four Ships arrived.
  • Lyttelton Catholic and Public Cemetery is a terraced hillside cemetery run by Christchurch City Council, with Catholic, Services (RSA) and public sections. Because of earthquake damage, only ash plots are available and new interments are considered case by case.

For a funeral, flowers usually go to the funeral home or the family; our funeral flower guide has more.

No flowers at Christchurch Hospital

Lyttelton has a general practice, Lyttelton Health Centre at 18 Oxford Street, but the nearest hospital is Christchurch Hospital at 2 Riccarton Avenue, with a 24-hour emergency department. Health New Zealand says flowers are not permitted in the wards or other areas of Christchurch Hospital. The hospital gift shops sell flower vouchers so flowers can be delivered when the person goes home – or you can simply send flowers to their Lyttelton home once they are back. See our Christchurch Hospital page.

A rose garden where the gaol stood

The old Lyttelton Gaol site is now a rose garden, with the Upham Clock in the middle. The 1876 Lyttelton Timeball Station was destroyed in the June 2011 earthquake; its tower was faithfully rebuilt and working again by the end of 2018. Lyttelton's three 1860s churches on Winchester Street were damaged in the earthquakes and demolished in 2011, and St Saviour's Chapel was returned to the Holy Trinity site in 2013.

Hill streets and the harbour

If the address is up steps or a steep driveway, say so in the delivery notes, and add a phone number for the recipient. A frequent ferry links Diamond Harbour across the harbour. For city deliveries, see our Christchurch page.
