New streets, new homes: double-check the address
In a town that has grown more than tenfold in a generation, it is common for a recipient to have moved recently, or to live on a street that is only a few years old.
- Confirm the full street address and house number with someone who knows.
- Add a phone number for the recipient so the driver can call if a new subdivision is hard to navigate.

Congratulations: the Selwyn Health Hub birthing unit
The Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub in Rolleston opened in May 2021 and includes a primary birthing unit. Before sending flowers to a new parent there, note that an old Canterbury DHB page (archived; last updated June 2022) said flowers and potted plants were not allowed in Christchurch Women's Hospital and its community maternity units, naming units at Rangiora, Selwyn, Ashburton, Kaikoura and Darfield. The current Health NZ pages do not repeat it, so check with the unit before sending. Flowers sent to the family home once mother and baby are back are the safe choice.

Farms around town: RD addresses
Plenty of Selwyn homes are on rural roads. Rural addresses use "RD" and the Rural Delivery number in place of a suburb (for example "RD 1"), and the town on the address is where the rural round is based, not necessarily where the house is. Rural addresses (RD numbers) can take longer, and NZ Post stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses from June 2024, so avoid planning a Saturday surprise for an RD address.
