Order flowersKaikōura lies on State Highway 1, 180 km north of Christchurch, with about 2,350 residents. The name means 'meal of crayfish' (kai = food, kōura = crayfish). The 2016 earthquake cut all road and rail access for a time, and SH1 reopened on 15 December 2017 – so it pays to order with some time to spare.

Kaikōura Health Te Hā o Te Ora at 25 Deal Street has GP services, long-term aged care and a primary birthing unit. It has no emergency department. Its aged-care beds cover rest home, hospital, dementia and psychogeriatric care.
An old Canterbury DHB page (archived; last updated June 2022) said flowers and potted plants were not allowed in community maternity units, naming the one at Kaikōura. The current Health NZ page says nothing on flowers, so check with staff before sending. For a new baby, flowers sent to the family home are the safe choice. See our Kaikōura Health page.
The entrance to Kaikōura Cemetery is on Scarborough Street. Mangamaunu Māori Cemetery is beside the sea about 15 km north of Kaikōura on the main road, on a sharp left-hand bend.
Takahanga Marae, on a terrace overlooking the town, is the marae of Ngāti Kurī and headquarters of Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura. The current marae opened in 1992 and served 10,000 meals in the week after the 2016 earthquake. If a loss is being marked at the marae, ask the whānau what is appropriate; our tangihanga guide can help.
The Kaikōura Trotting Cup weekend at the South Bay race course is normally held in early November. If you are sending congratulations or a thank-you around that time, order early in the week – weekend delivery is limited in many areas.
Fifty-nine Norfolk pines planted along the Esplanade between 1900 and the 1930s now have protected-tree status from the Kaikōura District Council. Fyffe House, built from 1842 on piles made from whale vertebrae, is the town's oldest surviving building and a Category 1 Historic Place; Mount Fyffe in the Seaward Kaikōura Range is named after the same family, the area's first European settlers. Kaikōura averages about 715 mm of rain a year. For the rest of the region, see our Canterbury region page.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Kaikōura.
