Flowers for someone in Richmond, Tasman

Richmond – Waimea in te reo Māori, and originally known as Waimea East – is the seat of the Tasman District Council and the main town of the Tasman region, with an urban population estimated at 19,950 in June 2025. It lies 13 km south of Nelson near the southern end of Tasman Bay, and forms part of the wider Nelson urban area with Brightwater, Hope, Māpua and Wakefield. First settled by Europeans in 1842, it was named in 1854 after Richmond on Thames near London. Here is what is useful to know before you order.

Around Sundial Square and the mall

In the middle of town, Sundial Square is home to an 800 kg sundial unveiled in 1994 – a handy landmark if you are giving a florist directions to a shop or office nearby. If your recipient works at Richmond Mall, which has about 70 stores, give the business name and the person's full name.

Richmond is also a school town: Waimea College (opened 1957) and the Catholic Garin College (opened 2002) are here, along with Waimea Intermediate.

Richmond's care homes

Several residential care homes are listed in Richmond, including Arvida Oakwoods Care on Lower Queen Street, Stillwater Lifecare & Village on Templemore Drive, Summerset Richmond Ranges on Hill Street North and Wensley House on Wensley Road. When sending to a resident:

  • give the full name of the home and the resident, and the room or wing if you know it;
  • choose a compact arrangement already in a vase, which saves staff finding one;
  • check with the home first if the resident is unwell.

Hospital stays: Nelson Hospital next door

The nearest hospital with a flower page on our site is Nelson Hospital in Nelson South. The former Nelson Marlborough DHB has advised that patients who are immunocompromised, in isolation, or in the ICU, HDU, IMCU or SCBU (special care baby unit) areas should not receive flowers. The current Health New Zealand page says nothing about flowers, so check with the ward before sending, and put the patient's full name and ward on the order.

Richmond Cemetery and Hope Garden of Remembrance

Richmond Cemetery is one of 12 cemeteries managed by Tasman District Council. Next door in Hope, the Hope Garden of Remembrance & Crematorium at 95 Clover Road opened in 2013 and is run by a local funeral service. If you are sending flowers for a service, address them to the funeral director or the venue, include the full name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service, and order as early as you can. Our guide to funeral flowers in New Zealand explains what is usual and what to write on the card.

Getting your Richmond order right

NIWA climate normals for Richmond show a mean daily maximum of 23.1 °C in January and a mean daily minimum of 1.7 °C in July, so a bouquet left outside on a summer afternoon will wilt quickly. A few more pointers:

  • Town or rural? Properties on the rural fringe use an RD number where a suburb would normally go, written like "RD 1". The mailtown is where the rural round is based, so copy the address exactly as the recipient gives it.
  • A phone number helps. It lets the florist arrange a handover instead of leaving flowers on a doorstep.
  • Allow time on weekends. Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas, and rural addresses can take longer.
