Order flowersLocals call it 'TK'. Te Kauwhata sits near the western shore of Lake Waikare, about 40 km north of Hamilton, surrounded by dairy farms, drystock holdings and horticulture. It is growing fast: the population rose 55.9% between the 2018 and 2023 censuses and is now estimated at about 3,780. Its name may translate as 'the empty storehouse' and can also mean 'the frame'; the place was called Wairangi, then Waerenga from 1897, before Te Kauwhata was adopted in 1910.

A government research station was set up at Te Kauwhata in 1886. Romeo Bragato ran it from 1901, and the first wine was made there in 1903; the original buildings are still used as a cellar door. The town sits at the centre of a small wine region stretching from Pukekohe to Thames and Paeroa, noted for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. Flowers with a local bottle make a thoughtful gift for a celebration.
The town borders the Whangamarino Wetland, the North Island's second-largest wetland complex and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Of its 239 wetland plant species, 60 percent are indigenous, mānuka is among the dominant plants of the peat bogs, and the critically endangered swamp helmet orchid grows there and nowhere else in the world. About a fifth of New Zealand's breeding bittern population lives in the wetland. Lake Waikare, east of town, covers 34 km² and is never more than two metres deep. Our native flowers guide has ideas if you want a gift with a local feel.
Apārangi Village Residential Care at 6 Pilgrim Place is Ministry of Health certified for rest home and hospital-level care. Put the resident's full name and room on the order, and choose an arrangement in its own vase. If the person is in Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, flowers are not allowed in Critical Care (ICU and HDU); check with the ward before sending.
For school milestones, Te Kauwhata College (Years 7–13) opened as a district high school in 1953, and Te Kauwhata Primary School dates from 1911.
Waikare Marae, with its Ngāti Hine meeting house, is a traditional meeting ground for the Waikato Tainui hapū Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Naho, Ngāti Pou and Ngāti Taratikitiki; our tangihanga guide explains what to bring. Waerenga Cemetery on Keith Road is a Waikato District Council cemetery in Waerenga, near Te Kauwhata rather than in the town itself. Many recipients live on farms with RD addresses, which can take longer; write the address exactly as given and aim for a weekday.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
Busy days book out early, so order ahead for Te Kauwhata.
