Sending flowers around Tasman

Tasman, Te Tai-o-Aorere, takes in Richmond, Motueka and Golden Bay. It is a unitary authority of about 59,900 people (Stats NZ estimate, June 2025), with its seat in Richmond. Orchards and vineyards surround several of its towns, and rural addresses need a little care, so a few details help your flowers arrive smoothly.

Richmond, the district seat

Richmond is the seat of the Tasman District Council and its largest town. Its central Sundial Square has an 800 kg sundial unveiled in 1994. For sympathy flowers, Hope Gardens of Remembrance and Crematorium is at 95 Clover Road, Hope, next to Richmond; it opened in January 2013 as the first crematorium and chapel built in the Nelson area in over 70 years.

Orchards, hops and sunshine

Around Motueka, apple, pear and kiwifruit orchards and specialised crops such as hops make horticulture the main local industry, and the area has one of New Zealand's highest annual sunshine totals. Wine growing is the main agriculture around Brightwater, which is hot from October through March and commonly gets frosts in winter. In the warm months, keep cut flowers out of direct sun; our flower care guide explains more.

Village history in Wakefield

Wakefield, about 25 km south-west of Nelson, has St John's Church (1846), New Zealand's second oldest surviving church, designed by Marianne Reay and built of tōtara. Every 2 January the Wakefield Country Fete, the region's oldest local craft market, runs at the village hall. Brightwater, nearby, is the birthplace of Ernest Rutherford.

Māpua, Tākaka and Golden Bay

Flowers can also be sent to Māpua and to Tākaka in Golden Bay, which do not have their own pages yet. For Golden Bay, order early and allow extra time. Give the florist plenty of notice for Golden Bay orders. If the recipient is a patient, the Golden Bay Community Health Centre page explains the old district flower policy; for Murchison, see the Murchison hospital and health centre page. The region's public hospital is Nelson Hospital on Tipahi Street.

Writing a Tasman rural address

Rural addresses use "RD" and a number where the suburb would go, then the mailtown and postcode, for example "RD 1, Richmond". The mailtown is where the delivery round is based, not necessarily the nearest village. Since June 2024 NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays, so aim for a weekday delivery to orchards and lifestyle blocks.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Māpua, Tākaka.
