Flowers for Ashburton

Ashburton – Hakatere – is about 85 km southwest of Christchurch and had about 21,600 residents in June 2025. It is a town with a long rose-growing tradition and cold winter nights, and its hospital has a maternity unit with its own rule on flowers. We have pulled these together so you can order with confidence.

Ashburton Hospital and the maternity unit

An old Canterbury DHB page (archived; last updated June 2022) said flowers and potted plants were not allowed in Christchurch Women's Hospital or in its community maternity units, naming the unit at Ashburton among them. The current Health NZ page for Ashburton Hospital says nothing about flowers, and other wards are not covered, so check with the ward before sending.

  • For a new baby, flowers sent to the family home are the safe choice.
  • For other patients, include the full name and ward, and ask the ward first.

Details are on our Ashburton Hospital page.

Roses at the Domain since 1895

Ashburton Domain is a 37-hectare park in the centre of town. Its rose garden was established in 1895 by curator W.W. Smith, and today the Domain holds a four-star New Zealand Gardens Trust rating, with extensive rose gardens around a sundial and butterfly-friendly plantings. It is open every day with free entry. Roses are an easy choice for an Ashburton gardener – they are part of the town's story.

Cold nights on the plains

Ashburton winters are cold, with temperatures falling below 0 °C on about 51 nights a year. Cut flowers do not like frost, so in winter:

  • avoid deliveries that may sit outside overnight;
  • add a phone number and clear delivery notes;
  • for farm addresses with an RD number, allow extra time – rural addresses can take longer, and NZ Post no longer delivers parcels to most rural addresses on Saturdays.

Sympathy flowers in Ashburton

The Ashburton Crematorium is listed in the town. Sympathy flowers usually go to the funeral home or to the family – check with the funeral director. For other towns in the area, see our pages for Timaru and the Canterbury region.
