Featherston Military Camp was a major World War I training camp from 1916, housing up to 8,000 men. Featherston Cemetery holds 182 identified Commonwealth war casualties – 180 from the First World War and 2 from the Second. Anzac Hall (1916) is a community hub, and a joint New Zealand-Japanese memorial marks the WWII prisoner-of-war camp 2 km north of town on State Highway 2. If you are planning a tribute for Anzac Day, our Anzac Day poppies and wreaths guide has ideas.
Featherston Cemetery on Western Lake Road has been run by South Wairarapa District Council since 1879. It has areas for headstones and cremation plaques, an historic section and returned services plots. Vehicle gates are open 6:30am to 5:30pm, so plan a graveside visit with flowers within those hours.
Richmond Funeral Home of Carterton has an office and viewing room, Richmond House, at 2 Fitzherbert Street, Featherston; the branch opened in 2016. For a service, send flowers to the funeral director with the full name of the person who has died and the date and time. Our funeral flower etiquette guide helps with wording.
The nearest public hospital is Wairarapa Hospital on Te Ore Ore Road, Masterton, about 37 km away, with a 24-hour emergency department. The former Wairarapa DHB has stated that volunteers help with delivering flowers and that its volunteer "Flower Ladies" tend patients' flowers between September and May. The current Health New Zealand page does not mention flowers, so check with the ward if the patient is very unwell.
The nearest residential aged care home is Palliser House at 186 East Street in Greytown, the only care provider listed for South Wairarapa. For a resident, choose a compact arrangement in a vase.
Featherston joined the Booktown movement in 2015 and hosts an annual literary festival, the Featherston Booktown Karukatea Festival, each May; the 2027 festival is on 7–9 May 2027. Flowers make a lovely thank-you for an author, volunteer or host that weekend. Nearby, Lake Wairarapa Domain is popular for walks, cycling, fishing, birdwatching and exploring the wetlands, and the Fell Locomotive Museum holds the world's only remaining Fell steam locomotive, H 199, which from 1877 climbed the Rimutaka Incline.
Put the recipient’s ward, room or the funeral director’s name on the order so the florist can find them.
