Flowers for someone in Waitākere Hospital
Waitākere Hospital at 55 Lincoln Road, Henderson, is west Auckland's public hospital, with coronary care beds, a maternity unit and a surgical unit. If someone you love is staying there, you may be tempted to send a big bunch. Health NZ asks visitors to hold back on flowers and plants, so we have set out what the page says and what to send instead.

Infection-control guidance asks visitors not to bring flowers or plants into hospital.
“Patients and visitors can help us to keep people safe by: ... not bringing items into hospital that could carry infection to patients or the clinical environment, such as flowers, plants, toys.”
Infection control comes first
The Waitākere Hospital page asks patients and visitors to help keep people safe by "not bringing items into hospital that could carry infection to patients or the clinical environment, such as flowers, plants, toys."
No wards are singled out; it is general guidance across the hospital. That makes it worth a quick call before you order. Check with the ward before sending, especially for the maternity unit or anyone recovering from surgery.
The foyer gift shop
There is a gift shop in the main hospital foyer with a variety of snacks and gifts. If you are visiting in person, a small treat or magazine from there is an easy way to bring something without carrying in flowers.
A quiet place in the hospital
The Wairua Tapu, Chapel of the Holy Spirit, opened in 2019, made possible by donations from the community. Families spending long days at the hospital sometimes find it a welcome pause.
When flowers make more sense at home
A bouquet delivered to the patient's home after discharge avoids the infection question entirely and lasts longer than a few days on a ward. Our Auckland flower delivery page covers the city, and our guide to making flowers last in a Kiwi summer helps the bunch stay fresh once it arrives. For the north shore, North Shore Hospital uses the same wording.
