The address the hospice has given

On its visitor page, as archived in September 2024, the hospice has advised: "If you would like to send flowers or items to your loved one who is in the Inpatient Unit please send them to: Attn: Patients Name Tōtara Hospice 140 Charles Prevost Drive, The Gardens, Manurewa 2105".

That page has since been removed, and the hospice's current visiting page does not mention flowers or deliveries. The approach may well be the same, but please phone the hospice on 09 640 0025 to confirm before you order.

Writing the label

  • Start with "Attn:" and the patient's full name.
  • Then: Tōtara Hospice, 140 Charles Prevost Drive, The Gardens, Manurewa 2105.
  • Add your own name on the card so the family knows who sent them.

Visiting the hospice

Visiting hours for whānau and friends are 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, at the Tōtara Hub; visits outside these hours can be arranged with the Inpatient team. All visitors sign in and out on the tablet in reception. The rooms cannot safely accommodate large groups. There is an onsite kitchenette open to patient visitors and a café open on weekdays.

Choosing flowers with care

Gentle, lightly scented flowers suit a hospice room, where a patient may be tired or sensitive to strong smells. A small arrangement in its own container is easy for family to move around. If you are unsure what to write, our guide to funeral and sympathy flowers in NZ includes advice on cards and messages for difficult times.

What the Inpatient Unit is for

The hospice describes the unit as being for people with a terminal illness who need specialist palliative care that cannot be effectively addressed at home, in hospital or in residential care. Its page lists symptom management, palliative rehabilitation, end-of-life care and psychosocial support, including counselling, social work and cultural liaison. The stated aim is usually short-term, intensive care, with the goal of returning home where that is possible.

Admission is based on the urgency and complexity of a person's care needs, and is discussed with clinicians, GPs or Acute Palliative Care Specialists. If you are unsure whether someone is already in the unit, ask the family or phone the hospice on 09 640 0025.

Parking, children and the café

  • The hospice says it has plenty of onsite parking in both its upper and lower carparks, both reached from Charles Prevost Drive.
  • Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult; young children cannot move through the Tōtara Hub unaccompanied.
  • Where a group is too large for a room, the team works with friends and whānau to welcome everyone on a rostered basis.
  • The Aroha Eatery café is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm, excluding public holidays.
