Sending flowers to Middlemore Hospital

Middlemore Hospital at 100 Hospital Road, Ōtāhuhu, is the big public hospital for south Auckland, run by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. It opened on 3 May 1947 and is also home to Kidz First Children's Hospital. Health NZ has published one clear flower rule for the site, and it applies to a single unit rather than the whole hospital. Here is what we found, so you can plan a bunch that actually reaches the bedside.

Flowers are restricted in some areas

No fresh flowers or potted plants in the National Burn Centre (Auckland regional burn service) at Middlemore. No rule published for other wards; an on-site florist sells flowers and gifts for patients.

“Flowers No fresh flowers or potted plants are allowed in the unit as pollen, water and soil are potential sources of infections.”

The one unit where flowers are not allowed

The National Burn Centre (the Auckland regional burn service, part of the plastic surgery department in the Galbraith building, Building 1) does not accept flowers or plants. Its page says: "No fresh flowers or potted plants are allowed in the unit as pollen, water and soil are potential sources of infections."

If the person you are thinking of is being treated for burns, a card, a message or flowers sent home after discharge are the better choice. For every other ward, Health NZ has not published a rule, so check with the ward before sending. Ward staff know whether a patient's treatment makes flowers a bad idea.

A florist on the hospital site

Health NZ lists a hospital florist at Middlemore with gifts for patients and staff. It closes on public holidays, so it is worth ringing ahead if you plan to buy something on the way in. If you are ordering from further away, your flowers can be delivered to the main hospital address; put the patient's full name and ward on the order so the bunch does not sit at reception.

Visiting Middlemore with flowers in hand

  • General visiting hours are 2pm to 8pm, with a maximum of 3 visitors at a time for any patient.
  • The burn centre also visits 2pm to 8pm daily, but with a maximum of 2 visitors at a time.
  • The main hospital phone number is 09 276 0000 if you need to find out which ward someone is in.

Visiting with a small posy that you take home again is a good compromise for wards where vases are hard to place.

Ideas that work on a busy ward

Bedside tables are small, so a compact arrangement in its own container travels better than a large bouquet that needs a vase. Children at Kidz First may enjoy a card or flowers; ask the ward first. Our guide to hay fever season and sending flowers has tips for low-pollen choices, and you can see local options on our Auckland flower delivery page.

Finding your way in

The main entrance is on Hospital Road, with short-term free drop-off spaces there. There is a bus and train station directly outside the main entrance, and a free shuttle runs to Manukau Health Park every 30 minutes. Paid parking has a free first 15 minutes, and free 30-minute parking applies between 10am and 4pm. Mobility spaces are available.

Wards, services and facilities

Health NZ lists a 24-hour emergency department with a separate paediatric area, Kidz First Children's Hospital, maternity services with neonatal care, and mental health facilities. Because the site also has neonatal care, check with the ward before sending flowers to maternity and newborn units.

  • Cafes include Subway, Columbus Coffee, Espresso Alley, Elixir Espresso and Fuku Sushi.
  • Haumanu Pharmacy is on the ground floor of the Scott Building.
  • Free Wi-Fi covers the site, and chaplains are on hand.

The hospital in brief

Wikipedia puts the hospital at approximately 800 beds, although its infobox gives 980, so treat the figure as indicative. The main number is 09 276 0000, and inpatient services are on 09 270 4799. Interpreting is available 24/7 in more than 90 languages.
