Father's Day flowers in New Zealand

New Zealand celebrates Father's Day in September. The NZ Herald explains that the date sits at the start of spring, as it does in Australia. That timing is handy for anyone sending flowers: the kōwhai is out, daffodil festivals are under way and the garden is waking up. Sunday deliveries are harder to arrange than weekday ones, so it pays to plan the order a few days ahead. Here is what you need to know to get the timing and the choice right.

The first Sunday in September

Father's Day falls on the first Sunday in September:

  • Sunday 6 September 2026
  • Sunday 5 September 2027
  • Sunday 3 September 2028

It is not a public holiday, but because it is a Sunday, delivery on the day is limited in many areas. A Friday or Saturday delivery to his home is usually the more reliable option. If you are sending from overseas, remember that New Zealand is ahead of most of the world, so Sunday arrives there first.

What spring brings into flower

Early September is a lovely moment in the New Zealand year.

  • Kōwhai. Te Aka Māori Dictionary gives the meaning of kōwhai as "yellow", and the trees are known for hanging clusters of large yellow flowers in early spring. The common kōwhai flowers from August to October. Tūī love its nectar.
  • Kākābeak (ngutukākā). Among the largest native flowers in Aotearoa, it blooms from late winter into early spring and is at its best in September and October.
  • Puawānanga. The native clematis has white flowers from July to November.
  • Daffodils. Carterton calls itself New Zealand's daffodil capital and holds its Daffodil Festival on the second Sunday in September, a week after Father's Day.
  • Blossom. Alexandra has held a Blossom Festival every September since 1957; the 70th anniversary festival runs 24 to 26 September 2027.

Native flowers like kōwhai and kākābeak are not sold as bouquet stock. They make a lovely theme for the card or a colour scheme, though. More in our native flowers guide.

Daffodils, kōwhai and the family dog

Spring brings a couple of hazards worth knowing about if Dad has pets.

  • SPCA New Zealand lists daffodils, especially the bulbs, among plants to watch out for.
  • Its list of plants that can be toxic to dogs includes kōwhai seeds and daffodil bulbs.
  • It also lists baby's breath (gypsophila), a common filler flower, among plants to watch out for.

If his dog likes to chew, or a cat sleeps on the windowsill, choose flowers from the SPCA's pet-safe list, such as roses, sunflowers or snapdragons. Our pet-safe flowers guide has the full picture.

If he is in hospital that weekend

Hospital rules on flowers differ from place to place, and there is no single rule for all of New Zealand, so check with the ward before sending. A few examples show how much they vary:

  • Wellington Regional Hospital accepts flowers except in the intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit and Ward 7 South. Anything sent should be clearly marked with the patient's name and ward.
  • Tauranga Hospital says flowers can be sent directly to the wards throughout the day.
  • Dunedin Hospital does not allow fresh flowers in intensive care, high dependency, oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical or medical wards, or in multi-bed rooms, because of the risk to patients with respiratory disorders.

If flowers are not allowed on his ward, a card now and a bouquet delivered to his home once he is discharged is a kind alternative.

Spring pollen: worth a quick question

About 1 in 5 New Zealanders have hay fever. The University of Auckland notes that the pollen season starts in spring with tree pollens, before grass pollen builds from October. If your dad sneezes his way through September, ask before you send, or choose a gift that doesn't depend on flowers. No source we found rates particular bouquet flowers as safe for hay fever, so we don't make that promise. Our hay fever guide explains the season.

Getting the address and the message right

A few details help a Father's Day order go smoothly:

  • Rural addresses. New Zealand rural addresses use "RD" plus a number where a suburb would normally go, for example "RD 1". The town in the address is where the rural delivery round is based, which is not always where the property is. Rural addresses can take longer, so allow an extra day. Since 29 June 2024 the national postal service has stopped Saturday parcel deliveries to most rural addresses, while Monday to Friday rural deliveries continue, so a weekday delivery is the safer plan for a farm or lifestyle block.
  • Order early in the day. Same-day orders placed late are the most likely to miss out.
  • Keep the message short. In te reo Māori, Ngā mihi nui means thank you very much, and Kia ora means hello and also thank you. Noho ora mai means stay well.
